— All and all 2005 was a good metal year while not stellar. Except maybe for the last Sentenced I don't think any other album really grabbed me good. A few good surprises like Heed showing that Daniel Heiman can be part of an excellent band, unlike Crystal Eyes which is really not to my taste really. I hope I can review Heed soon, its quite a great power metal album. The equilibrium album is also really cool too. I hope 2006 will be a great year metal and otherwise :). And I wish you all Happy New Metal Year 2006 and all the best ! In Metal We Trust ! Chris

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor — As a fan of older (heavier) Blind Guardian, Savage CIrcus is a very worthy and outstanding compliment to modern day BG.
2. 2.
3. 3.
4. 4.
5. 5.

Disappointments

1. 1.
Running Wild - Rogues En Vogue — These guys sound tired and fresh out of ideas. With so much quality material in their back catalogue, you can easily ignore this one.
2. 2.
Crystal Eyes - Confessions Of The Maker — Outstanding vocalist + boring songwriting = waste of talent, and major letdown
3. 3.
Falconer - Grime vs. Grandeur — The return of Blad poises the band to make a major comeback.
4. 4.
Wizard - Magic Circle — I'm worried about these guys. Without Piet Sielck's help on this album, they totally fell flat.
5. 5.
Hammerfall - Chapter V - Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken — They helped bring this style of metal back to prominence in the late 1990's, but they are quickly being surpassed by a flock of newer bands.

Joke of the Year

1. 1.
Sharon Osbourne — "Won't you join us in a delightful egg flinging affair? It will be a splendid fun time." Sharon is as good for metal as cocaine is for an infant.
2. 1.
Sharon Osbourne - Eggthrower Extraordinaire — "Won't you join us in a delightful egg flinging affair? It will be a splendid fun time." Sharon is as good for metal as cocaine is for an infant.
3. 2.
Totally Fucking Gay - With Friends Like These Who Needs Enemas? — Totally fucking disgusting! I don't know how thse guys made this with a STRAIGHT face. Nevermind, I don't want to know anyway...
4. 3.
Barcode - Showdown — Nuclear Blast takes a hit to their credibility with this pathetic excuse for a release on a metal label.
5. 4.
GZR - Ohmwork — You're Geezer freakin' Butler, Black Sabbath legend! Why play this nu-metal shit?
6. 5.
Midnight - Sakada — This is like going to the Prom with the hottest girl in school, then seeing her 15 years later only to find that she now weighs 350 pounds. I didn't expect Crimson Glory, but this?!

After a slow start to the year with some well known bands letting me down, I thought 2005 was going to be a down year for metal. During the late summer, and continuing through the end of the year, some really impressive releases fell into my lap, making 2005 an impressive year for me. I won't say THE best, but strong nonetheless.

As for the site itself, some very good ideas were presented by reviewers and readers alike to improve the site, and many of those carried out. With the new year, we hope to make some additional improvements as well. Since he stays mainly behind the scenes, you may not realize how much our programmer, Philip plays a part in implementing changes to the site, and even maintaining it. Without him, many of these great ideas would remain just that; ideas. Thanks for all you do, bud!

We've also added a few reviewers during the year, and we hope they are enjoying and continue to enjoy being a part of this site.

Although family, work, and career pursuits have taken Chris and Danny away from reviewing on a regular basis, I want to express my gratitude to both for allowing all of us into your "family" of metalreviews.com.

Finally, another round of "thanks" are in order for all of you who read our reviews each week, and have compelling (and heated at times, lol) discussions about music. I think that's what differentiates this site from others on the net.

Here's to a prosperous and happy 2006! Rock on!

Jeff

Top Albums

1. 1.
Candlemass - Candlemass — Out of all the so called "comeback" albums of 2005, "Candlemass" has to be the biggest one of all. If you were away from the metal scene for years and were going to comeback in anyway, shape or form, than this is the way to do it! And Candlemass did, in
2. 2.
System of a Down - Mezmerize — WOW! This album also spent a good amount of time in the MP3 player. These guys released their best album to date; a roller coaster mish mosh of circus like tunes. One of the more interesting albums of 2005.
3. 3.
Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution — Considering Rob Halford was back, this effort had very high expectations and came very close to meeting all of them. Overall, this was a pretty solid release that included mix of different styles from all the Priest albums.
4. 4.
Stratovarius - Stratovarius — This album was very good considering the circumstances behind it. It also grew on me with each listen. Hopefully they can take things a step further on the next one.
5. 5.
Demons & Wizards - Touched By The Crimson King — Demons and Wizards delivered once again with this release. This time they really mixed things up with using more acoustic parts, but that did not take anything away from the powerful drumming and riffs.
6. 6.
Hammerfall - Chapter V - Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken — This band still showed even after five albums they could still release a quality power metal album without sounding boring or cliche'. Much better than "Crimson Thunder"
7. 7.
Kreator - Enemy Of God Kreator continued to stay the course after making a comeback with "Violent Revolution". Brutal thrash at its best!
8. 8.
The Darkness - One Way Ticket To Hell...And Back — Although it wasn't as good as "Permission To Land", The Darkness showed some depth and diversity with this release. Being I like E.L.O. and Queen, this album was one that took some time to grow on me.
9. 9.
Disturbed - 10,000 Fists — This band is redefining what Nu Metal really is. Supercharged riffs, some excellent vocal work, but 14 songs was a bit much.
10. 10.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries Opeth are one of my favorite progressive death metal bands. Another classic in the making!
11. 11.
Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy — This is another band that I really gave up on after "I Want Out Live", maybe because in some parts of the US they were not getting as much airplay with future releases, or even getting proper distribution for their albums. This release also got me into alot of the latter stuff like "Master of the Rings" and "Time of the Oath".
12. 12.
Slough Feg - Atavism — I like what these guys have to offer. This is some great straight forward heavy metal.
13. 13.
System of a Down - Hypnotize — A great follow up to "Mesmerize", though not as strong overall.
14. 14.
Falconer - Grime vs. Grandeur Falconer kind of lost something with this release but I still liked it.
15. 15.
Scott Stapp - The Great Divide — Not as good as Creed, but close. More stripped down and raw and very personal.

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Arthemis - Back From the Heat — I never really paid much attention to this band. The first album was ok. But this album was a big improvement, especially vocally. This is one of the few bands whose album really grabbed me from the first listen, only to grow with each spin. Great melodic power metal.
2. 2.
U.D.O. - Mission No. X — Here's a guy who I really haven't paid much attention to and after 10 releases as a solo artist I really didn't expect anything exciting. This release is the closest he has sounded to classic Accept than anything else in my opinion. Excellent song structure and production.
3. 3.
Obituary - Frozen In Time — I didn't really know much about these guys, let alone listen to them until this release. This was one of those albums that got me so interested in the band that I ordered all of their earlier albums. Some great Death Metal!
4. 4.
King's X - Ogre Tones — With the last few releases King's X seem to be going back to styles found on the first two or three releases. That's because they are using song that were written earlier on in their career but never used until now.Makes sense! I miss the sound and style of old. This album has its moments and I found it as listenable than anything they have done in the last five or six years.
5. 5.
Styx - The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings — To finally see these first four albums re-mastered and re-released as a double disc set was a pleasant surprise. Most of them are out of print and very hard to find on CD. Styx recorded some of their best material in the early days and this package made a great additionto anyone's Styx catalog.

Disappointments

1. 1.
Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine — This was a real let down for me.This album just didn't grab me like "Tempo of the Damned". I really had a hard time trying to like this one.
2. 2.
Stryper - Reborn — After they released "7 Weeks Live In America", Stryper seemed well on their way to something much bigger. However, just like alot of other 80's hair metal bands that tried to make comebacks in the early 90's, Stryper seemed to want to disassociate themselves from a certain style and image by taking on another musical direction. The end result for me was some very average music. Nothing very exciting.
3. 3.
Dio - Evil or Divine Live — Well, as much as I love Dio, I can't stand it when he releases live albums where a majority of the tracks have been released 1000 over and over again! This live album did have some songs he never recorded before, but MAJORITY is the key word here. Come on Ronnie! You've been with bands like Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbatj and solo. You mean to tell me there are no other songs that deserve the live treatment! Time to change your Depends you old fart!

Metal Reviews 2005

Well, another year has come and gone here at Metal Reviews. As far as albums go, 2005 had its fair share of winners and losers. If there is one word I can use that best describes the year in review, it would be "reunion". I don't remember a year that has had as many releases by bands which reformed recently after being out of the limelight for sometime; bands like Candlemass, Judas Priest, Obituary, Stryper, Stratovarius, etc. I tried to listen to as many albums as I could, probably no where near as much this year when compared to 2004. I actually started this at the beginning of the year and as it went on, I added those releases which I thought would fit somewhere on it. What you see above is the end result:

Top Albums

1. 1.
Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy — Not only the best Andi Deris era Helloween album, it ranks up there with the best that the band has ever done...an album definitely worthy of the "Keeper" name
2. 2.
Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution — This would've been my top pick but Helloween bumped it off at the last minute. A great comeback album, it has aspects from almost all eras of Priest and was in my CD player for a long time this year
3. 3.
Kamelot - The Black Halo — The best album of this band's career!! Although it continues with the same sort of sound as previous efforts, the songs are better and they've perfected their brand of power metal
4. 4.
Masterplan - Aeronautics — Not quite as good as their debut, this one's another killer melodic power metal album
5. 5.
Circle II Circle - The Middle Of Nowhere — Much better than the debut, it shows a heavier aspect of the Savatage sound and offers an alternative slant on melodic heavy metal
6. 6.
Astral Doors - Evil Is Forever — They sound so much like a Dio/Rainbow clone but I can't help but like this album very much....very catchy and very good
7. 7.
Allen - Lande - The Battle — One of the best melodic hard rock/metal albums I've heard in a long time....reminds me of some of the classic Dokken CDs from the 80's
8. 8.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour — Their brand of ultra-heavy and modern metal blended with Warrel Dane's trademark vocal style makes them one of the more unique metal bands out there. Why these guys aren't huge right now baffles me...
9. 9.
Bruce Dickinson - Tyranny Of Souls — Not quite The Chemical Wedding but another killer and heavy album from the Maiden frontman
10. 10.
Timeless Miracle - Into The Enchanted Chamber — This debut album just blew me away....excellent melodic power metal, solid songwriting and a lead vocalist that most bands would kill for!!
11. 11.
Paragon - Revenge — These guys keep on delivering album after album of classic German style heavy metal
12. 12.
Shadow Gallery - Room V — An awesome epic and more melodic than ever, these prog metal veterans should be stealing more of the limelight from bands like Dream Theater
13. 12.
Deep Purple - Rapture Of The Deep — An awesome return to form. This one has so many catchy tracks that it's hard to stop playing it!!.....These guys are not going to sit around and rest on the laurels of Highway Star and Smoke On The Water for the rest of their lives
14. 13.
Iommi (with Glenn Hughes) - Fused — A great blend of Toni's trademark riffs and Glenn's very soulful voice. many of the riffs on this album could've easily been worked into great Black Sabbath songs
15. 14.
Grand Magus - Wolf's Return — A great doom metal band, this one has much more classic metal elements and much more uptempo songs than previous work
16. 15.
Freedom Call - The Circle Of Life — Not as good as Eternity, it shows that Freedom Call can still play solid melodic power metal without all the speediness of previous work
17. 15.
Shadow Gallery - Room V — An awesome epic and more melodic than ever. These prog metal veterans should be stealing more of the limelight from bands like Dream Theater

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor — Holy Shit!!! If someone would've handed me this without telling me who it is, I would've sworn that it was a new Blind Guardian album. Sounding like the Tales From The Twilight World, Somewhere Far Beyond and Imaginations era Blind Guardian, the resemblance is stunning!!
2. 2.
Nightscape - Symphony Of The Night — Another debut album from a new power metal band that shows lots of promise with great songs and awesome vocals
3. 3.
Place Vendome - Place Vendome — After Supared, I'd pretty much given up on Michael Kiske releasing anything this solid!! The fact that PC69 members are involved shouldn't surprise me....great melodic hard rock/AOR stuff
4. 4.
Starbreaker - Starbreaker — Another new band that had a great debut album. Anything that Magnus Karlsson (Last Tribe) is involved with seems to all be good. Having TNT's Tony Harnell on vocals is also a great asset
5. 5.
Billy Idol - Devil's Playground — Yah I know...(ducking flames)...I'm not a fan of Billy Idol's previous work but this album is a great album and I'm not ashamed to admit that I actually like it alot!!

Disappointments

1. 1.
Grave Digger - The Last Supper — Boring and nowhere near the quality of recent Grave Digger releases
2. 1.
Stratovarius - Stratovarius — It's a miracle that this album was ever made due to the trumoil with Timo Tolkki over the last couple of years. It has some very good songs but overall is a substandard release by these veterans. Now that things within the band have apparently stabilized, lets' hope that they get back on track
3. 2.
Running Wild - Rogues En Vogue — Crisp sound but no energy and edge....I think the well is running dry for Rolf
4. 3.
Falconer - Grime vs. Grandeur — I like Sceptre Of Deception but there's very few moments on this album that can compare with past glories
5. 4.
Demons & Wizards - Touched By The Crimson King — It's not that it's a bad album, it just lacks the atmosphere of the first album and the songwriting quality. All of Jon's "twiddling" riffs are all starting to sound the same
6. 5.
Gamma Ray - Majestic — I'm a huge fan and listened to this album quite a bit. There's some great songs and the sound of the album's great but overall there's just not enough solid tracks to keep my interest

Joke of the Year

1. 1.
— Sharon Osbourne - She just committed career suicide for Ozzfest with her antics towards Iron Maiden. Ozzfest's credibility was already on shakey ground but it will all come crumbling down now. I wonder just who will go to next summer's shows.....you don't fuck with Maiden...theyhave the most loyal fans in metal today and they don't forgive and forget!!
2. 2.
Totally Fucking Gay - With Friends Like These Who Needs Enemas? — Who really needs Totally Fucking gay??...enough said
3. 3.
GZR - Ohmwork — legendary Sabbath bassist tried to do nu-metal....and it failed miserably

Words / Final Thoughts

— This was a great year with some awesome releases. I wish to thank all the labels for their support as well as the unsigned bands that sent us promo material. Metal Reviews has expanded again with some new reviewers and a hearty "Welcome" to them all. There's several "honorable mentions" for my best of the year list; albums that I just started listening to and would've probably made it onto list if I'd heard them earlier.

Sentenced - The Funeral Album... Another great album and a fitting end to the band's career.
Vision Divine - The Perfect Machine....I loved their last album and only just got this one recently.
Candlemass - Candlemass...I just started listening to this one about a week ago...easliy one of the band's best so far. Stream Of Passion....Arjen Lucassen's latest with more of a gothic female fronted band approach. I like it very much but again, just started listening to it.

I could go on but suffice to say, there was a regular feast for the eyes for pretty much all genre's of metal this year. Once again, I wish to thank the readers and hopefully the new "interactive" approaches that we have taken with MetalReviews.com will make the site even better.
Here's to a great 2006 and all the best to everyone (as I hoist a pint of Boddington's Pub Ale in a toast!!)

Marty.

Crims

Top Albums

1. 1.
Kamelot - The Black Halo — This is an obvious choice for me. One of my favorite bands of this decade released what is probably their most matured and progressive effort to date. It did take more listens "to get" than a typical Kamelot release, but this was all but typical. A true acheivement in Melodic Power/Prog.
2. 2.
Dream Theater - Octavarium — This year has been the year I finally got heavily into Dream Theater. Having owned their CDs for a good number of years, this was the first that I really took to them. Octavarium did not disappoint when I finally got around to it. Though musically it is different than Images And Words... in spirit, flow, and execution it's similar. In any case, the closet they've got since and what that means is great prog.
3. 3.
Scar Symmetry - Symmetric In Design — It's hard for me to ignore this release. I listened to it more than anything except for maybe The Black Halo. Though it might come across as accessiable due to perfect production and catchy clean choruses, admist extreme vocals, it is nethertheless perfectly excuted. There are few bands I can listen to that satisfies both my need for melodic music and aggressive music at the same time.
4. 4.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour — A nice rebound to what many deemed as a disappointing Enemies Of Reality. That was a very good CD, but we expect more from Nevermore, and this release delivered in a huge way. They toned down the heavy, down-tuned guitars a bit on this release, and the result was an experience more similar to Dreaming Neon Black. This is a good thing.
5. 5.
Blood Red Throne - Altered Genesis — I once read in an interview with Tchort of BRT that they made BRT to bring back head banging riffs and rhythms to Death Metal. They definitely exceed in that and manage to better themselves every CD in that regard. With a grittier production job and more Thrash influences and this CD is a neck breaker in the truest sense.
6. 6.
Brainstorm - Liquid Monster — German Power Metal doesn't get much better than this. Brainstorm does all the right things, abliet not the most original things. Regardless, I spent a lot of quality time with this.
7. 7.
Timeless Miracle - Into The Enchanted Chamber — I haven't enjoyed very many, if any new bands in the overly happy Power Metal genre ("Flower Metal" if you will) lately, with many bands being way too wussy with no edge. Then Timeless Miracle came along. It took a heavier guitar sound, 80's Power Metal influences (Stormwitch came to mind), and folk influences, but someone other than Freedom Call released a "Flower Metal" CD worth listening to, nevermind enjoying to great ends.
8. 8.
Gamma Ray - Majestic — At last, a proper follow up to Power Plant. Yeah, so what if Hell Is Thy Home sounds like Leather Rebel, it still kicks ass.
9. 9.
Hypocrisy - Virus — Where the hell did this come from? For what seems like an eternity, Hyprocrisy hstas been playing atmospheric, mostly mid-paced Metal with spurts of aggression. Sure it was good, but most of us have fonder memories of the era that brought classic songs like Adjuing The Sun. Well, Hyprocrisy is back, in a way. While not completely ditching the atmospheric sound of the last few releases, this is CD wholly more aggressive and brutal, bringing to memory images of even their first two releases. Welcome back Hypocrisy!
10. 10.
Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure — Normally I don't like Doom/Gothic Metal. Yet the CDs I do like in the genre, I like a lot. This release was one of those Doom CDs I loved. Though the lyrics got on the cheesy side at times, the combination of somber Doom and more up tempo, crushing Doom Metal sensibilities (plus excellent extreme and clean vocals) resulted in many repeated listens.
11. 11.
Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution — A fine come back, of sorts for Halford and friends. What I liked most about this CD is that there were songs from multiple incarnations of "The Priest sound". Indeed it was mostly dominated by a continuation of Painkiller, but if you liked hard enough, there were more 80's Priest in this CD than just the first single.
12. 12.
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness — Alltogether mesmerizing, this is an excellent example of what Pagan Black Metal has to offer.
13. 13.
Candlemass - Candlemass — Messiah is back where he belongs, with Candlemass. I think I listened to Black Dwarf more than any song this year.
14. 14.
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked — Another solid addition to the ever growing Nile catalogue. Not much to say here. More of the same, but done in only the way Nile can do it.
15. 15.
Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy — A fine CD by Helloween. I didn't quite go ape-shit over it like a lot of people, but I enjoyed it. They really went all out on this and it shows. Part of me still likes the simpler Helloween though.

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Primal Fear - Seven Seals — As much as I like Primal Fear they were getting a tad tiring. Before I started listening to this I mentioned to a friend, very sarcastically mind you, maybe Primal Fear has evolved their sound *chuckle* *chuckle*. Well, wouldn't you know it, Primal Fear finally evolved their sound. While not a complete depature from previous releases, it does sound different and stands on it own.
2. 2.
Disturbed - 10,000 Fists — I know what you're thinking. This is nu-metal. Ok, sure, but it's damn good nu-metal. With practically none of the rapping, lame start-stop riffs, whiney vocals, and quiet verse-"aggressive"chorus concepts populating what people consider nu-metal, this is one modern release I'm not ashamed to call Metal.
3. 3.
James LaBrie - Elements Of Persuasion — A lot of the times solo stuff by established musicians is throw away material, but this was good. Not top 15 good, but good nevertheless. Nice compliment to his Dream Theater work.
4. 4.
Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter — These guys almost did for modern Prog what Pagan's Mind did a few years ago. Notice how I said, "
5. 5.
Wetwork - Synod — The most surprising fact about this release was the female vocalist. The music was good, don't get me wrong, but I was shocked when I looked the band photo after listening to the CD about 3 times.

Disappointments

1. 1.
2. 1.
Obituary - Frozen In Time — It's nice to have Obituary back on the Death Metal CD but Cause Of Death this isn't. I guess we should have expected it since the final Obituary CD before the break up wasn't that great either. Good Death Metal, but I expecting more from the band that brought us Cause Of Death and World Demise.
3. 2.
Black Label Society - Mafia — Please stop the madness. You don't have to release CDs every year. Stop it, now. Take a few years to write a CD and then crush us over the head like you did with Stronger Than Death. You know it's getting bad when even Zakk Wylde's guitar playing is putting me to sleep.
4. 3.
Children Of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet? — Bad CD? Not at all. In fact, in weaker years this might have made the top 15, but regardless it's still disappointing. For someone who worships Hatebreeder (someone being me), it makes me sad that this band has regulated itself to macho-pseudo-Thrash music with keys. Sure, they do it well, but even Hatecrew wasn't this dummied down compared to Hatebreeder.
5. 4.
Midnight - Sakada — What the heck was this? I confess, I was hoping for something that sounded like Transcendence. I guess I should have known since Midnight always wrote those weird acoustic tracks on Strange and Beautiful. Thank god he rejoined Crimson Glory. Put away the acoustic guitar and don the mask once more!
6. 5.
Crystal Eyes - Confessions Of The Maker — Whoops! And the award for mis-use of one of the best vocalist in Metal award goes to. Believe it or not I liked this CD to some degree, but Crystal Eyes were fine with their previous vocalist, in fact, their previous CD is far better than this one. Heed may not be the best thing musically, but at least it uses Heiman's voice properly.
7. 5.
Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine — Whoops! I guess somewhere in the last year Exodus forgot how to Thrash. I think there's more groove on this CD than James Brown record.

Words / Final Thoughts

1. 0

With this being my first year out of college and with a full time job my Metal listening time was cut in off. I still managed to get in what most would consider important releases of the year but I didn't have the oppurtunity to do as much exploring. Not to mention, hardly any time to write a review, unfortunately, as most of you probably noticed.

Anyway, it was a good year, not really better or worse than the last. In a way it was the year of the come back release, or releases from bands who hadn't done one in a long time. Most of them were successful, some very (Priest and Candlemass) and others not so successful. Where this year was especially good were the concerts. At least in Toronto, we had more Power Metal bands than ever and we even had a huge performance by Priest as well as Gigantour. Gigantour was our first big Metal festival, probably ever. Sure, we have regular festivals with lesser-known local extreme bands, but Gigantour was the closest think we've got to a European open air concert and it was fantastic (even if Life Of Agony blew). Anyway, it's a trend that's continuing with another visit by Sonata Arctica and Gamma Ray in May... not to mention two sold out shows by Bodom and Amon Amarth. Things are looking up in North America and I hope that results in two things: more North American Metal bands (not playing Metalcore or Grind) and more concerts.

2006 should be interesting. I'm really looking forward to a Nils K. Rue fronted Eidolon. I hope that their potential is finally reached now that they have an awesome vocalist. And if Amorphis' return to making quality Metal with Elcipse is any indication of the quality of the releases this year, 2006 should be a winner. Now, where is that new Hollenthon CD...

It's that time again, time for us to start compiling these lists to try and narrow down the best releases to a mere fifteen. This year wasn't as difficult for me as previous years because there just hasn't been too much that has blown my skirt up in 2005. Vanishing Point released a five hundred megaton monster with Embrace the Silence one of the handful of albums that I can truly say "I only played this for five days straight." Redemption shot to slot number two with their sophomore effort which is the single most satisfying Progressive Metal album of the year. What, Bon Jovi is at number three? No your eyes aren't deceiving you Have A Nice Day is just the most fun hard rock album of the year and deserves its spot in the upper echelons of the list. Regarding slots four and under, take them for what they really are, great albums and worthy of your attention if only for a brief listen.

On a personal note, 2005 was a very eventful year for yours truly. My knowledge of the industry has grown even more due to the realization of one of my goals, going out on tour with Lilitu. That experience in itself was the highlight of the year. From meeting James Murphy in Florida and Liz Ciavallera (Metal Maniacs editress) in Chicago and New York, hanging out with Jay at CBGB's, singing Hero with Nightrage, to making friends with the entire travelling crew those five weeks were well spent. I'm also witnessing the growth of Metal Reviews and it looks fine from my perspective, the new additions to this team over the last few months means that the output of reviews and interviews will increase for you our ever faithful readers. Debate the choices by the staff members here and discuss your own picks for 2005, and make 2006 a hell of a year.

Top Albums

1. 1.
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell — Listening to it over and over, it became a perfect amalgam of grief, melody, heaviness and lyrics. The story of Lucifer's banishment from heaven ... through the eyes of Lucifer himself
2. 2.
Dark Tranquillity - Character — My favorite all-time band never produced a bad album. And to top it off, these guys are great people
3. 3.
Sentenced - The Funeral Album — Why aren't more reviewers singling out this album? My feelings on them calling it quits are mixed - on one hand if they will never produce another album, they just made a true statement to be respected, but if they never make music again it will be all our loss
4. 4.
Slumber - Fallout — Another great album in the gothic doomdeath style
5. 5.
Yyrkoon - Occult Medicine — Funny name, serious music. Move over Behemoth, make room for Yyrkoon in the land of black-death metal crossover
6. 6.
Slough Feg - Atavism — Traditional heavy metal with the unusual and forward thinking approach
7. 7.
Witchcraft - Firewood — Black Sabbath can be worshipped with class
8. 8.
Grand Magus - Wolf's Return — Candlemass probably has heavier riffs, but Grand Magus has more memorable songs
9. 9.
Antimatter - Planetary Confinement — If you had to pick one acoustic album, this one is it in 2005. Quiet explosion of emotions
10. 10.
Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution — The band that made me listen to metal back in the early 80s is alive and relevant again. Who would have thought? A few weaker tracks do not obscure the overall appeal of this album
11. 11.
Bruce Dickinson - Tyranny Of Souls — This may not be Chemical Wedding (nothing would be), but a solid, well crafted album nonetheless
12. 12.
Vreid - Kraft — Spirit of Valfar, please, have your mercy on this bunch
13. 13.
Thy Catafalque - Tuno Ido Tarlat — Instead of labeling it as a surprise, why don't we say what is true - non-orthodox album mixing many an influence that deserves to be on your listening list
14. 14.
Vile - The New Age of Chaos — Up and coming American death metal band with black metal melodies, politically charged and vicious album
15. 15.
Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure — These guys have evolved in the premier American melodic doom band

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Asguard - Dreamslave — A quantum leap jump for this band from Belarus - extreme, melodic and paying homage to the roots
2. 2.
Monolithe - Monolithe II — When one 50 min + doom track is not boring, you have to call it a surprise
3. 3.
Brainstorm - Liquid Monster — The surprise is that no power metal album cracked my Top 15 this year, Brainstorm at least kicks some serious ass
4. 4.
Epoch of Unlight - The Continuum Hypothesis — The state of Tennessee can produce metal, with a Ph.D holder in biomechanical engineering as a band leader. Brainy blackened thrash of high caliber is on display
5. 5.
Katai Tamas - Erika Szobaja — From the creator of Thy Catafalque - completely non-metal, completely captivating

Disappointments

1. 1.
Green Carnation - The Quiet Offspring — This band is too damn good to be producing commercial radio friendly rock. Not to worry, I already heard Acoustic Verses (early 2006 release) and it took my breath away
2. 2.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour — This will not be a popular pick, I know. But I could not ignore the fact that some unbelievable songs on this album stand hand in hand with the utterly regretable ones
3. 3.
Sigh - Gallows Gallery — For so much hype, how is this better than Imaginary Sonicscape? Production is a final nail in the coffin
4. 4.
Ulver - Blood Inside — Try as I might, I could not get into it at all
5. 5.
Leaves Eyes - Vinland Saga — I probably read about the album too much before I actually got to listen it. Never go into something with your expectations overblown

Joke of the Year

1. 1.
P.H.O.B.O.S. - Tectonics — This is a simple recipe, really: you produce an unlistenable noise, then call everybody an idiot for not "comprehending your art"
2. 2.
Raging Speedhorn - How the Great Have Fallen — I just don't get it - what is the bruhaha all about? Mediocre angsty metal/hardcore crossover should not be this popular
3. 3.
Midnight - Sakada — OK, so I did not expect Crimson Glory, but this? The man needs to reflect back and not tarnish his reputation
4. 4.
Scorngrain - Cyberwarmachine — Fur coat outfits, rap and metal don't mix

— I always have trouble with year-end lists. Actually, it is easy for me to name my most favorite Top 5 or so albums, but then the struggle begins. Should I put album ABC on and keep album XYZ out of spot #14. Thus, let me give a very honorable mention (in no particular order) to the albums which, besides the ones listed above, also received significant playing time on my personal airvawes in 2005: Crionics Armageddeon's Evolution, Detonation Portals to Uphobia, 1349 Hellfire, Kamelot The Black Halo, Mourning Beloveth A Murderous Circus, God Dethroned Lair of the White Worm, Icarus Witch Capture the Magic, Masterplan Aeronautics, Alcest Le Secret, Primal Fear Seven Seals, Stride Imagine, Taake Hordaland Doedskvad, Bolt Thrower Those Once Loyal, Horna Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne, V:28 SoulSaviour, Immolation Harnessing Ruin, Helloween The Legacy.

Top Albums

1. 1.
God Forbid - IV: Constitution Of Treason — One of my favourites and definitely one of the best groups of the new resurgence of American Metal crop blasted out one mighty fireball of metallic excellence! A flawless mixture of new and old, riffs that overlap the mere border of "catchy", rocksolid musicianship, impeccable songwriting, all wrapped within a very appealing story. Being a sucker for concept albums, my tastes were delighted all the more. Superb record and one the brightest future hopes in metal for me.
2. 2.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour — Six studio albums into their career, not a single flop behind them, the virtuoso patrol of a lifetime release a cauldron of progressive heaviness and beauty that just might be their best work yet. With Nevermore, thats saying a damn lot. Quote the Raven (rather the professional wrestler, than Allan Poe's bird), "NEVERMORE"!
3. 3.
Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy — Releasing a very worthy follower to the pioneering Keeper-duo was NOT a task even to be consdered lightly, but against many odds, the Pumpkin Boys did it, and then some. The best epic pieces of the year along with the trademark Hello- funny stuff
4. 4.
Kreator - Enemy Of God — Kaiser Mille and his band of merry headbangers kept on their brutal path to returned glory, spicing the pit with some melodic Gothenburg-influences and delivering one hell of a record!
5. 5.
Gamma Ray - Majestic — The German invasion to the top spots continued with Kai Hansen holding the war horn high and firing them Gamma Rays fast a furious. Overtly catchy melodies abound on every track of this traditional, yet modern enough package of fist-raising delight.
6. 6.
Strapping Young Lad - Alien — The mad scientist of metal just doesnt seem to be able to put a bad record no matter how many different projects he handles during every year. A vicious hurricane of futuristic chaos, mayhem and the occasional "eye of the storm"-calmness, Hevy Devy keeps on rolling supreme.
7. 7.
Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution — Rob Halford is back, baby, along with the scorching leads, anthemic songs and typical twists for a Priest record in brilliant fashion. Do I have to go on? The right answer would be, "No".
8. 8.
Children Of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet? — Despite understandable criticism due to the change in style, but I enjoyed AYDY immensly. More rockin' and straightforward leanings didnt rust the Bodom scythe as the slaying continued at the bloody Finnish shores.
9. 9.
Dark Tranquillity - Character — The Swedish championchip for melodeath magnificence is being glued more tightly and tightly into the crafty hands of Dark Tranquility, who gather melodic brutality better and more consistently than any of their countrymen
10. 10.
Bruce Dickinson - Tyranny Of Souls — When the Air Raid Siren is handling vocals, it should be a given that the singing side of an album is untouchable. Very nice work, darker and heavier than Maiden as Bruce's solo albums usually have been, brilliantly carrying the torch of Balls and Chemical Wedding.
11. 11.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries — Never have been a fanboy of the band, though liked individual songs. Ghost Reveries however is a very solid release with the progressivness staying in control to compliment the songs instead of the players' skills *COUGHdreamtheaterCOUGH*. The keyboards really fit Opeth well, gotta love that hammond.
12. 12.
Demons & Wizards - Touched By The Crimson King — Jon Schaffer + Hansi Kursch...possibilities of sucking? Non-existent. Add a Led Zeppelin-classic and youve got the cherry on the cake.
13. 13.
Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine — Although the thrashing was somewhat absent in the presence of the grooving...the awesome, necksplitting groove! Hey, youre lookin at the groovemaniac here! Rob Dukes was a very good addition in a tight spot, and even though I dig Tempo more, the Kill Machine carries the Exodus name with pride.
14. 14.
Corrosion Of Conformity - In The Arms Of God — And while were on the subject of Groove, just grab a brew and take a comfy position by the pit. Devastating!
15. 15.
Deep Purple - Raptures Of The Deep — The veteran maistros still got it. After the solid Bananas, Raptures nicely brings new flavours to the tested organ-boogie-rock formula of Purple. Sweeet!
16. 15.
Deep Purple - Rapture Of The Deep — The veteran maistros still got it. After the solid Bananas, Raptures nicely brings new flavours to the tested organ-boogie-rock formula of Purple. Sweeet!

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor — Last year the surprise punch of the year came from an follower of Blind Guardian's glory, and in some twist of fate, this phenomenon is repeated with the awesome masterpiece that is Dreamland Manor. With two members of Persuader, last years "surprisers" and Thomen the Omen behind the drum kit, it's no wonder the end result is much like Guardian. And that equals to MAGNIFICENT!
2. 2.
Terror 2000 - Terror For Sale — The most fun record of the year, a definite party goer for me. Goofy yes, but so am I, as I am one that encourages taking music seriously only to a certain point. "Liquer saved me from sports" is a definite future T-shirt slogan for me.
3. 3.
System of a Down - Mezmerize — After an OK breakthrough disk and a "collectible tunes" set, SOAD prove without a doubt that they are much more then the hype and success. Simultaniously quirky, crazy and off-the-walls yet pop-filled, melodic and very well structured, System solidifies it's place as one of true music's brightest messengers in the mainstream.
4. 4.
HORSE The Band - The Mechanical Hand — Definitely the weirdest thing I heard all year. As a Nintendo-nostalgia freak I jumped on this immediately, but also got drenched in the fact that this hand is filled with much more than just a gimmick that brings back warm, fuzzy feelings of Mega Man the Mario Brothers. Epic keyboard-walls, rocking riffs...a true original in their craft.
5. 5.
Dragonlord - Black Wings of Destiny — Black metal with good production and clean vocals? Thats not true, grim, necro, evil, inverted, frostbitten or even krieg, is it? If it is, the trolls with Horgh-tattoos in my backyard have been lying to me big time. Neveretheless, Eric Pettersen's BM project churned out some wonderfully thrashing stuff to annoy the neighbouring block with.

Disappointments

1. 1.
Biomechanical - The Empires Of The Worlds — Although the album is good and the final four tunes form a brilliant thunderstorm or angry, symphonic sci-fi metal, I would be lying to myself if I didnt say that I was dissapointed by the whole package. Granted, after something as pulverizing as Eight Moons, it's pretty tough to try and top yourself.
2. 2.
Black Label Society - Mafia — It would probably do The Wyldeman good to take a short break from albums. It still mostly kills and the ballads are as tear-jerking as ever, but the foundation, the RIFFS are losing the sharpest razor's edge. Still one of my favourite bands, but the workload might be catching up to the standards.
3. 3.
The Darkness - One Way Ticket To Hell...And Back — Permission To Land rocked like a runaway moose on fire and buffed by steroids, but unfortunately the crunching party didnt continue as strong on the more laid back second disc. Good tunes like the title track are present, but overall a weak set.

Joke of the Year

1. 1.
Totally Fucking Gay - With Friends Like These Who Needs Enemas? — Totally Fucking Hilarious. With the exactly opposite effect then hilariouness of Terror 2000's Terror For Sale.
2. 2.
LosLos - Viva LosLos! — Excellent concept, very lame result upon bringing said concept to life.
3. 2.
los Los - Viva los LOS! — Very good concept, very lame result upon bringing said concept to life.

— Lots of excellent metal, few dissapointments, end of military service, a new start in university, first very own flat, loads of liquer (I still maintain that my striptease-acts are not as sadistic to my fellow (wo)man as my coursemates would belittle), and hearty times all around. So damn many things happened in 2005 to me personally and in the world at large, its quite perplexing at times. Upon completing my first full year onboard (23 months and counting without being fired..."thats kuul") Im glad to see that the quality of reviews from my head has stepped up. Many thanks to all MR-colleagues, forum elitists/screwballs, metal, funk and gangsta rap fans everywhere for a smashing time. Now is the time to make 2006 the pleasure-squared experience we know we have within us. We just need the Jägermeister to truly drench ourselves in it. HiHo, Jolly good show and keep them irons high and hot. Rock N Roll is never Die!!! -Aleksi-

Opeth - Ghost Reveries — Undoubtedly the #1 album of 2005 for me. Few bands release 8 albums without having major dips in their sound, and yet in the face of changing times, labels, and new members, Opeth still managed to release one of the most stellar metal albums ever. A text-book example of a great band masterfully exploring new territory, and all the while staying true to their roots.

Jesu - jesu — It was a brutal battle for this spot, to embrace a cliche. But this release stood head and shoulders above all the other combatants. At once crushingly heavy, beautifully epic, sorrowful, and human... this gets the top spot. It's a timeless classic that I'll listen to again and again and again. I can't wait for the next one.
2. 2.
Strapping Young Lad - Alien — Devin is one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time. His self-titled SYL album had been a disappointment, but this one is nearly on par with City. At once extreme and well-defined within the parameters of music, with progressive tendencies and screamed/sung/howled vocals, I'll be listening to this one for a long time coming.
3. 3.
The Axis of Perdition - Deleted Scenes from the Transition Hospital — The only reason I haven't reviewed this yet is because it'd just be six paragraphs of hyperbole about how good it is. Just buy it. The Axis of Perdition are pushing atmosphere into a whole new dimension, a dimension where the world has become flesh.
4. 4.
Deathspell Omega - Kénôse — This should be on every black metal fan's top-ten list. Not quite as good as Si Monvmentvm, but still brilliant and complex in a way most modern black metal bands can't be bothered to try. The next full-length will be the real litmus test; let's see how they manage.
5. 5.
Pelican - The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw — If you were to cut the guys in Pelican, they'd bleed music. Complex and moving and ripe with emotion, and the shortened version of March Into the Sea is still beautiful. This music is touching in a way not unlike Burzum, in that it's infused with earthly melancholy and bright, uplifting moments of hope.
6. 6.
Drudkh - Lebedynyy Shlyakh (The Swan Road) — I would not hesitate to call Roman one of the greatest songwriters in black metal at this time. His songs are epic and filled with the nature's true spirit, infused with a sense of life.
7. 7.
Lurker of Chalice - Lurker of Chalice — I'm glad Wrest released something in 2005. The man's getting lazy. In any event, this is quite the doom-laden, hate-filled work of strange metallic music. It carries with it the spirit of the ocean, and all the men she's seen die, and what lies stirring onimously within her monstrous depths.
8. 8.
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh — SMASH! That's your face after listening to this brutal old-school death metal release. It's pulverizing and evil in all the right ways, with Peter Tagtgren delivering the best performance of his career, snarling like a runaway wolverine.
9. 9.
Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies — Cephalic Carnage throw enough manic twists and wild turns into their grind/death/stoner/jazz/whatever metal to keep anyone who's a fan of complex music interested, but they can throw out a straight-up riff and grind away with the best of them. And when Lenzig comes in on Piecemaker, over that HUGE riff, roaring like a man just out of hell, don't you just want to go kill something? Fear not; that's what it's all about.
10. 10.
Sunn O))) - Black1 — ...like diving into the open grinning mouth of an ancient cave and listening to the screeches within that echo off its stony walls. Will you be next? Who knows? Best work from Sunn 0))) so far.
11. 11.
Klabautamann - Der Ort — What Opeth would sound like if they got their act together, cleaned their songwriting up, and learned to really harvest the power of emotion instead of appealing to it cheaply. Epic and transcendent. Their next will be even better, I'm certain.
12. 12.
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not — Cryptopsy's triumphant return! More timeless tech-death made all the more palatable by the inclusion of melodic interludes and Flo's amazing drumming.
13. 13.
Fantômas - Suspended Animation — I... really like this... but I just can't figure it out. That's probably the reaction Mike wants... but I still like it. I'll understand it someday, hopefully.
14. 14.
Napalm Death - The Code Is Red... Long Live The Code — I underrated this one severely. This is, without a doubt, the best Napalm Death album since Fear Emptiness Despair. They don't sound old at all, belting out those vicious roars and reeling off those flesh-rending riffs. Grind for life!
15. 15.
Cathedral - The Garden of Unearthly Delights — The best Cathedral since Caravan Beyond Redemption. Dirty, dark, and just straight-out rockin', this should break Cathedral into the big time... again... but regardless, I just can't help but air-guitar along to such songs as Corpsecycle and Tree of Life & Death. Finally, a doom band that knows how to bring the riffs and the depression, all in the same package.

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil — I hated this band's previous releases. Boring metalcore with a decent rythm section. But this one... well, it's miles beyond those two. I hope that they drop some of the blatant pop tendencies and that Shadows learns to sing, not whine, before they record another album, but this one is good in it's own right.
2. 2.
Beneath The Massacre - Evidence of Inequity — I'd never heard of this band prior to this release; but they offer up some surprisingly excellent technical death in the vein of Necrophagist with the manic energy of Decapitated. Full-length, here we come.
3. 3.
Look What I Did - Minuteman For The Moment — My god, what a crazy-ass band. Just one veering surprising tune after another. I couldn't possibly begin to predict the unpredictable, and they take advantage of this by using everything under the sun to create their spazzed-out somethingcore.
4. 4.
Project: Failing Flesh - A Beautiful Sickness — More experimental industrial-thrash? Wait, nobody's pulled that that I can remember very well. As a result, this band sounds endearingly fresh and new, with tight songwriting and powerful riffs.
5. 5.
Soulfly - Dark Ages — Calavera is going back to his Roots (bad pun intended) with this release that balances mad thrash riffs with a bit too much groove and mallcore for my taste, but hey, there are more thrash cuts on this then there were on the last Exodus album

Disappointments

1. 1.
Craft - Fuck the Universe — Jesus, Craft, WHY? WHY'D YOU DO IT? After the absolute MASTERPIECE of Terror Propaganda, you went ahead and made this patently mediocre release... It'd be better if it were worse so I can hate it, but I can't bring myself to.
2. 2.
Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine — Groove, groove, groove, groove, groove, groove, groove, and thrash. It's supposed to be the other way around. Bring back the riffs! The RIFFS!
3. 3.
Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies — What the crap is this heap of garbage masquerading (no pun intended) as a legitimat

Joke of the Year

1. 1.
Totally Fucking Gay - With Friends Like These Who Needs Enemas? — This joke was hilarious. Check it if you just need to have a nice, long laugh.
2. 2.
Fear Factory - Transgression — Who the hell are you kidding, Fear Factory? It's over. Give it up. Form a U2 cover band or something. You're no good. Just go the hell away. PLEASE. Stop tainting your legacy before the only FF albums people remember are Transgression and Digimortal.

This year was a year of maturation; wherein I explored my inner thoughts and desires and found them to be lacking, selfish, foolish. This year was a year of regression in terms of metal, regression into the ass-kicking of the past instead of 90's general lousiness in most genres. This year was a year of growing love of life, love of self, and love of the people around me.

I'd like to thank everyone on the Metalreviews.com team for being insanely cool and compassionate, everyone in the forum for being just plain awesome, and heck, everyone in the world, for supplying carbon dioxide for the plants to breathe.

Here's to an even better 2006!

Cheers,

Aaron.

When you thought there was no possible way to take Metal one step further, Fantômas took it two with Suspended Animation. Fantômas’ already insane approach on Jazz and Metal, combined with Sunday morning cartoon-inspired music and effects resulted in one of the most chaotic and amazing listens of the year. With 30 songs, each clocking around two minutes, Fantômas explore music in a way no one else has, creating an album that manages to be equally interesting, fun and rocking. All hail Patton!

Even tough Ulver haven’t produced a Metal album in ages, it’s a band that will always appeal to a certain Metal fan because of the way they have approached music from the very beginning; and with Blood Inside, Ulver have once again pushed the envelope further. Even if synth, samples, electronic beats and Garm’s voice are their main elements of Ulver nowadays, they still have the same effect as with Bergtatt; to push the listener as farther as they possibly can by challenging him to understand something different and new, and to subsequently embrace the beauty of it.

It’s hard to believe that everything you hear was played and recorded by a single man (Ivo Henzi), but it’s even harder when it’s this amazing. While the album features elements of many different styles of Black Metal, they’re used so well and originally that it is safe to say Henzi has absorbed and morphed them into something of his own. The album features great song structures interesting enough to avoid the clone title, and the riffing is infused with enough epicness and melancholy to keep you hooked for a long time. How Forest of Fog is still unsigned goes beyond me.

Stargazer are here and they’ve come to save Death Metal from faux avant-garde and monotony as well. Stargazer approach Death Metal in a quasi-Jazz way to keep things always interesting but at the same time they know where to draw the line, avoiding pointless wankery and boring musical wandering. And even if the band’s saw isn’t very raw, The Scream that Tore the Sky is still brutal, but smart and classy.

Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV. Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness — Always had a passing interest in them but this completely blew me away. Inspired songwriting, unbelievable melodies, mucisianship and an epic concept. Don't miss out on this

Opeth - Ghost Reveries — Trust me, I'm no Opeth fanboy, I actually find a great deal of their music dull. however to give the devil his due, I did really like this, Reverie/Harelquin Forest in particular.

Hell is for Heroes - Transmit Disrupt — Little known English band. Not strictly metal although influenced heavily by European hardcore.

Take the amazing vocals of Ann Wilson and magnify them by 10 and you’ll be close to how good Lana Lane is. This album is another killer, prog-rock masterpiece in a long line of equally great albums! If you’re a fan of 70’s-influenced prog-rock and female vocalists you should definitely give her a try.

15. 11.
<a href="http://www.soadonline.net" target="new">System Of A Down - Mezmerize/Hypnotize</a> — - The metal elitists hate them and call them nu-metal, most people don’t know what to call them, but whatever they are, they’re definitely unique. These albums were released about 6 months apart, but are to be considered one album (they even create a 2CD package when the digipacks are combined). Both feature some truly killer, quirky, alternative, quasi-avante-garde metal tunes. Not everyones’ cup of tea, but if you can appreciate what this band has done since its inception in 1995 then you will be treated to some of the most unique music you’ve ever heard. And amazing, too.

Pro-Pain would make Jasta and Co. crap their pants like 2 year olds if they were ever on the same stage. This band has been pounding out thrash-infused hardcore since 1992 and consistently manages to kick my ass from pillar to post! This is just another example of the greatness this band offers.

Disappointments

1. 1.
Dead Soul Tribe - The Dead World — Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad album by any means. It was just a little too mellow for me, not what I expected at all. Although I do like it, it's my least favorite Dead Soul Tribe album.

3. 2.
Midnattsol - Where Twilight Dwells — Another good one, but the pre-release hype was ridiculously over-exaggerated. It definitely didn't live up to the praise.

5. 3.
Jacobs Dream - Drama Of The Ages — After hearing so much praise for this band I bought this album. After repeated listens I just could not find anything good about it. Their previous work may be excellent, but this album was a dud for me.
6. 4.
Tristania - Ashes — This one could actually be listed under Surprises. After it was vilified by fans and reviewers alike, I grudgingly bought this album and was actually treated to a decent to very good album. It wasn’t nearly as bad as people had claimed. With that said, it simply wasn’t on par with their previous work, thus a disappointment overall. Still not bad, though.
7. 5.
Masterplan - Aeronautics — Again, this is another album that I definitely like. In fact, this is a great album. Unfortunately, the self-titled was an amazing album and this one just didn't come level with the sort of greatness the first album had. I just don't find myself craving this album like I still crave the first one. Disappointed, yes, but pleased...nonetheless.

Top Albums

1. 1.
Candlemass - Candlemass — (99/100) Outstanding release, containing what I found to be the most adeptly constructed and powerfully performed songs I'd heard all year. Marcolin sings as well as he ever has, cementing this as my favourite.
2. 2.
Meshuggah - Catch Thirtythree — An intricate tapestry of subtleties. Forbiddingly amelodic, Catch 33 reveals more of its myriad secrets with every listen. A worthy sequel to "I".
3. 3.
Reverend Bizarre - II: Crush the Insects — (89/100) Reverend Bizarre have discovered what many bands have overlooked; the power to make doom metal enjoyable.
4. 4.
Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies — (88/100) Cephalic Carnage's ability to blend so many different musical styles without damaging the integrity of their songs can never fail to impress.
5. 5.
Wyrd - Rota — (85/100) A charming journey through the woods with a pinch of strangely anthemic, traditional metal mixed into the folksy blackness.
6. 6.
Boris with Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave — (85/100) The serene moment of reflection you seem to share with the band is maybe the most touching I've heard this year. Sixth place because drone is far away from traditional metal, but do look for this if you have the patience and the will to tackle noise/drone.
7. 7.
Drudkh - Lebedynyy Shlyakh (The Swan Road) — (81/100) A masterful lesson in the use of black metal as a tool of hypnosis.
8. 8.
Hieronymus Bosch - Artificial Emotions — (80/100) Great fun, with all the interplay and inventiveness you'd expect from technical death metal. I find myself reaching for this more often than the Atheist remasters which also came out this year.
9. 9.
Isole - Forevermore — (79/100) Great epic doom debut, I hope to hear more like this next year.
10. 10.
Make a Change.. Kill Yourself - Make a Change.. Kill Yourself — (77/100) Suicidal black metal often stretches on way past its welcome; this release is different as the transitions happen exactly where I'd want them to, for which I am grateful.
11. 11.
Napalm Death - The Code Is Red... Long Live The Code — (75/100) More solid death/grind from the stalwarts. I must admit to liking their overall sound much more than any individual tracks.
12. 12.
Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation — (75/100) A good funeral doom release; all the tracks are colossal and most of them hit the spot..
13. 13.
Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution — (73/100) Judas Priest are always great fun, and I was pleased with this new material, particularly Lochness.
14. 14.
Wigrid - Die Asche eines Lebens — (70/100) I enjoyed this slab of suicidal black metal, but it loses points for aping Burzum just a tiny bit too much.
15. 15.
Klabautamann - Der Ort — (70/100) A surprisingly inventive and textured album; I only wish it had maintained the momentum of the first three songs throughout the album. It was good enough to convince me to track down another of their releases, "Our Journey through the Woods" and I hope to hear more from them.

Surprises of the Year

1. 1.
Jesu - jesu — Although I am not as enthusiastic about this release as others have been, I admit that this is a pleasing continuation of the Godflesh project..
2. 2.
Ulver - Blood Inside — I was surprised because this got such a good response from the metal world even though less than half of the tracks contain guitar playing.
3. 3.
Fantômas - Suspended Animation — Again, I'm pleasantly surprised at the lengths the metal scene has gone to, to embrace this album. My favourite NON-METAL album of 2005.
4. 4.
Frantic Bleep - The Sense Apparatus — These guys have some good ideas, and although they haven't entirely gotten to grips with their potential yet, I'm hoping that they will. Be prepared for an amazing album in their future.
5. 5.
Alcest - Le Secret — A heartbreaking EP. I enjoyed the way the wave of emotion spread through the forums, affecting (almost) everyone that decided to investigate this release.

Disappointments

1. 1.
Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies — This was so bland as to be entirely forgettable. I'll always treasure "For to End Yet Again" from their previous release but the quality gap saddens me.
2. 2.
Sunn O))) - Black1 — I feel this album got a lot of unwarranted praise. Other bands have surpassed Sunn O))) in the drone and drone/doom genres.
3. 3.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour — This album is the story of a band that was engulfed and dominated by their own production, all but erasing themselves from their end product.
4. 4.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries — No new ideas on this one.
5. 5.
Taake - Hordaland Doedskvad — So, the trilogy ends not with a bang, but with a whimper. I hope I speak for everyone when I say that this release does nothing to blunt the impact of the previous two, though.

Joke of the Year

1. 1.
Fear Factory - Transgression — bwahahaha, part one.
2. 2.
Biomechanical - The Empires Of The Worlds — The joke here is that everyone is so enthused about this directionless album. *ducks flames*
3. 3.
Soilwork - Stabbing The Drama — Imagine I also put the CoB, In Flames and Arch Enemy releases in this slot. Gothenburg nuts seem to swallow whatever's presented to them..
4. 4.
Old Man's Child - Vermin — The very pinkest of all the pink metal on offer this year.
5. 5.
Rammstein - Rosenrot — bwahahaha, part two.

Words / Final Thoughts

1. 0
— It seems to me that all the overrated bands released incredibly horrible albums this year, leaving us dedicated music listeners to dig deeper into the underground to find our fixes. The toppling champions of metal have left a gulf; this coinciding with the rise of both Doom and post-rock hopefully heralds a shift towards maturity and pacing in metal. Thus, I proclaim this a good year!
