I just went on my lunch break about an hour ago, and I drove down to the shops with a guy from work. This is a guy who only EVER listens to one metal band, Tool (because he likes prog) but thinks that Tool sometimes get "unlistenably" heavy.
Anyway, so I put on The Harvest Floor. In part because I just bought it over the weekend and wanted to listen to it, but as it was a really short drive the main reason was actually to see his reaction.
His first reaction, when the blast beats kicked in, was to burst out laughing quite hard and say "That is the worst noise ever." That was the part I expected to happen. It made me laugh as well, kind of like "yeah, haha, i guess it could seem that way".
But then as we got to lunch, I turned it off (we'd only heard the first track) and he says to me in all earnestness "Why would you listen to this skinhead music?"
And I was like "Wtf? What exactly do you think makes this skinhead music" and he goes "Only skinheads could be angry enough to listen to actually enjoy this music."
It really got to me, not only because his logic was retarded, but also because of the obvious implication that I don't actually enjoy extreme music and listen to it as an image thing. (The implication is obvious because I've known this guy for years and he knows I'm no skinhead.)
It's pretty insulting. Like, I can understand if someone else's interests seem uncool to you, but to be completely and utterly unable to even understand that its possible for someone to genuinly like something you think is trash....well, it speaks of quite serious ignorance.
Anyway, to cut a long ramble short, it kind of made me appreciate you guys. That is all.
