Monster effects aside, thought Godzilla dreadful. spoiler warningShouty Walter White anchors it at first, but killing him off and letting the film be lead by dreadful actors and charisma-vacuums like the kid from Kick-Ass and his Olsen twin wife was a huge mistake. Didn't care at all about them, Ken Watanabe's near-racist-caricature scientist never looked less than constipated, and the film didn't deliver on monster action until the end. The whole 'godzilla is the guardian of the planet!' thing was always laughable, as was the clockwork nuke that they had to turn off ten minutes later or it would devastate San Francisco, only for it to go off five minutes away from it anyway. Just awful writing. Pacific Rim was far better, had a sense of humour and Stringer Bell shouting about the end of the world, and made you take giant robots punching monsters in the face seriously. On a brighter note, the trailer for 22 Jump Street looks brilliant and I will laugh like a drain at Jonah Hill pretending to be a Mexican gangster etc without shame.
