Has thrash ever been on the cutting edge of musical experimentation? This isn't sarcasm, I'm seriously interested in innovative thrash bands if there are some, as I can currently think of none
Well, clearly there was a time before thrash existed, and clearly therefore the first thrash bands must have been on the cutting edge of something.
"Experimental" is different to "innovative", though... there are very few experimental thrash bands, but various innovative ones. I can't see how anyone would think Megadeth, for example, back in the day weren't an innovative band. That's to say nothing at all of Voivod, Coroner, Watchtower, etc.
Nowadays obviously the vast majority of thrash bands aren't innovative, but then there are always some. Aura Noir, for example, I would consider a thrash band, and they are often considered to be pretty innovative by a lot of people.
