I'm not saying 'tis crap. But 80s at the highest, come on. And wtf, I hardly praised that Dark(en)y stuff at all, let alone like you praised CH. I think you're wrong, really, adding a few heavy guitars here and there to what is basically disco does not a >90 album make.

It sounds like something that isn't a rehash of something already done thousands of times before. Thereby making it better than approximately 97% of black metal albums. And we have black metal albums here regularly getting in the 80s (even Microcosmos! 😛 ), so by that logic I'm effectively obliged to give it something in the 90s.

Disco was very popular back in the day, apparently. As was electronica. And Alt Metal.

And Microcosmos deserved the score I gave it, because it was done well, and not full of flashy stuff designed to catch the eyes of the cynical and tired-out Metalheads!!!!1

But hey, go ahead, give it a 92.

I learned to ride a bicycle perfectly competently when I was probably about 6. I still can today. I demand some form of praise and recognition for my continued competency in cycling!

And have you not heard much disco or funk, then? Because Chrome Hoof are closer to that than they are Alt Metal. And, y'know, disco and funk are hardly new things.

Those are nostalgia bands. Great nostalgia bands, but as we agreed in the Live Review thread, nostalgia bands nonetheless.

Chrome Hoof is a fusion band. They use influences from other styles and combine them in an original way. They certainly aren't "basically disco". There is jazz rock, electronica, post-punk etc. None of these are new things, but in this combination they are. You make them sound like Donna Summers or James Brown. A better comparison would be The Mars Volta, another band that uses "old" influences in an original way.

Eh, I'd argue. They're not fusion, they're a disco band with other stuff on the top and an open-minded approach to songwriting. They're not Donna Summer, fine, and are closer to Mike Patton than James Brown, fine, but not sounding like 90% of metal =! deserving of massive high scores and wanton praise unless they can back it up with the songwriting, which I would say Chrome Hoof can't. I'll gladly listen again before adding my score, but I think you've gone overboard on this one, too enthused by finding something different after weeks of writing about samey Durrth Metal.

Like I said, I will probably (if I get home in time) moderate my tone a bit in the review, but the album is still excellent and is as good if not better than a lot of the stuff that gets scores in the 90s here, IMO. The songs here are good, and in some cases better conceived and structured than a lot of, say, Mr Bungle's stuff. e.g. a tune like Sea Hornet.

Better than Bungle?! I will definitely listen again, but nothing I heard was that good. Again, you're like a sailor on shore leave, grabbing the first scabrous wench he sees and declaring her a princess.

I wouldn't say it's better than Bungle overall... just that as a coherent song, it works more than something like To Carry Stress in the Jaw, for example, which is essentially a montage of different ideas stuck together. But TCSITJ has other strengths. I'm just demonstrating that a lot of the songs are very well thought out- they aren't just "take some disco, and shove in some rock bits".

Meh, barring a couple of tracks Chrome Hoof is far, far less avant-garde and sounds, again, like experimental disco rather than a genuine bonding of various genres, a la Carry Stress... I think you're objecting more to the disco tag's prominence than anything. Wiki calls them an experimental orchestra, which seems a bit much as the electronics have far more prominence in their sound than the other instruments.
