Rather than get all worked up over the "norsecore!" debates of years past I always enjoyed late period Immortal for what is was: good blackened heavy metal.
What the hell is so bad about "norsecore"? While I don't mind some slower paced atmospheric black metal, why do some of these shitty one off demo bands complain about bands like Marduk or Endstille? I never understood that.
Well, the reason why so-called norsecore doesn't do anything for me, personally, is because I always found them too sterile and emotionless; and the constant hyper-blasting just irritates me.I recall you and I had a brief converstaion about my views on black metal and how it puts my mind into a sort of alpha-wave state; I do enjoy the Sturm und Drang strain of many black metal bands, but ultimately I seek black metal that takes my mind away and norsecore, with it's incessant hyper-blasting, roared vox and lack of ambience, just interferes with that whole trip.And there is too much that I enjoy listening to paired with too little time to bother with things I don't enjoy.But, hey, if you and others like it, cool.

I find that even with the constant buzzing of bands like Infernal War and Endstille, it's that spine tingling reverb from the tremolo picking that defines it at least in acoustic sense. More mid-tempo material however, is far more apt to subjecting the listener to intent of trance induced states, which is something I'm beginning to appreciate a lot more as I discover more and more bands in the music. Regardless, of the positions you and I take, it is that ambiance and genuinely evil atmosphere that separates the incredible bands from garbage like Dimmu Borgir.

It's strange that you posted that album, because I just heard "Love me like a reptile" and "Bite the bullet" this afternoon. I work with this older metalhead unloading trucks at Wal-mart, and all he plays is Motorhead, Judas Priest, though I convinced him to blast some Immolation today.. Great stuff.

Actually yes, I picked the album up not too long ago, and it surprised me in terms of it's quality. It's faster paced black metal though not norsecore, with acoustic breaks used sparingly (Dusk of the Fimbulwinter). If you like Emperor you're bound to adore this band..

I've heard that before..., but I see they have a myspace on metalarchives, I will give them a listen.

And yeah, the first two tracks of Dark Medieval Times are pretty godly. I've noted the godly guitar tone/production on this album before, and the acoustic breaks are excellently placed.

I'm feeling a Mayhem Husker inspired rant/rave, so I should just go to bed before that happens, night gentlemen.
