traptunderice wroteI guess when I mean structure I mean like song composition. Portal is still very much doing tech death albeit intense or brooding where I feel like Axis just kinda does their own weird creepy thing and it gets labeled industrial black metal I guess but it really isn't to me. It's like a noisy soundscape. But this isn't as bad as I remember it to be honest.
Had song composition in mind as well. Actually, what you describe above might be exactly why Deleted Scenes (singling that one out here because I feel that was their most successful from my perspective) is more effective for me. While Axis' stuff is still written deliberately in order to create that creepy atmosphere, it doesn't sound like it's deliberate. I don't really have to extend belief to imagine some crazy psychward ghost doctor experimenting on howling, muttering lobotomized patients. I think part of it is that I went into listening to them with really high expectations. I was expecting to hear what others were describing: which was supposedly something otherworldly, terrifying, inhuman and just plain weird/offputting etc. I just did not get that, and found them musically uninspiring on top of that.
But like I said, I will give the latest another shot tomorrow. Maybe I'll have a different experience of it, sometimes when I come back to things after a long time I hear things I didn't hear originally.
