Good choice Zad. Haven't played this in a while, but your review has encouraged me to dig it out.

I would stick to Arise, nevertheless, Beneath the Remains is awesome and deserves more the status of Classic.

Can we expect an Arise review sometime? :)
Good review Zad, but you've made better ones.

Totally agree with the above comment. I also found the review very good and found myself agreeing on most points. Maybe I like Arise slightly more because it's more atmospheric and varied but BtR is indeed thrasier as Zad said in the review. BtT is a a great album in any case, one of the best heavy thrash albums of that classic thrash era. People who grew up with such those albums will feel nostalgic everytime they see or hear a mention of one of them. For me Sepultura's BtR and Arise were the albums I listened the most every morning before going to school in order to "power up" for the day! :D :dio:

Great review, Zad. Although, as I've said numerous times before, I think Chaos AD is Sepultura's best album (and also one of the greatest metal albums of the 90's). Nevertheless, Beneath The Remains is a great thrash album - or death-thrash, if you will. Ditto to Arise. I used to consider both albums "overrated", but they've really grown on me these last few years.

I do have a slight concern, though. Sepultura is considered more thrash metal than death metal. But Death is often considered a full-on death metal band. Barring their first three albums, how is Death really more a death metal band than Sepultura? I actually find Sepultura to be faster and more punishing.

Well, no-one says Death Metal has to be heavier than Thrash. A lot of Thrash bands are heavier than Death bands - especially the modern wave.

At the expense of probably over-analyzing this, may be the notion that death metal must be faster and more extreme than thrash metal is a misconception. It's not really a written rule, and death metal (contrary to popular belief) isn't necessarily the next step after thrash metal in terms of extremity. Chuck Schuldiner's growls certainly sound less human than Max Calavera's, even on Symbolic and Sound Of Perseverence. Death's guitar riffs also have a less "fun/playful" sound than Sepultura's.

So yeah, I guess I can see where Death would be more of a death metal band than Sepultura. Despite not being as fast or as brutal.

I do consider Death to be death metal, but it's that wonderful type of death metal where it could be...Oh yes...also referred to as thrash metal!

Wow-analysing metal sub genres in context of an undefinable 'heaviness' isn't geeky at all! Now, BTR is mint, but Arise is better. Oh lordy lordy yes.

Not a big fan of Schizophrenia. Too much blatant ripping off other band's stuff (e.g. riff out of Slayer's Necrophiliac comes up on one song and stuff from an early Sodom song comes to mind).

I ended up either selling/giving it away.

Though I always liked Escape to the Void - for some reason I picture a little black spider marching into a black hole with a serious look on its face.

Still it should be reviewed.

still trying to wrap my head around some reviews

albums that should be here (like Schizophrenia) aren't but then albums I didn't expect to be in here (like Sickening Horror's The Dead End Experiment) are, strange

anyway I fucking LOVE Schizophrenia, I don't hear any of what you're talking about it just seems straight up thrash goodness to me

Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia and BTR are their best. Arise is damn good too.

I fail to see how Scizophrenia "ripped off" Slayer, they sound nothing alike.
