Thoughts? This must be his most mainline film yet, everyone'll watch this. Has he sold out? Should they make films about disasters?

So are we to see a Spielberg Tsunami film now, with Tom Cruise as an ex-alcoholic trying to find his children after the event? Really, this just proves to me how far the movie industry's prepared to go to make a wad.

We have a much-admired Spielberg film about the holocaust already, and Tom Cruise has been in a war film. Why shouldn't a film about terrorism be ultimately as successfull?

Of course, if it's transmogrified into a family orientated action film a la Mission Impossible, as you suggested it may, then it would be a travety. But I hope Stone is intelligent enough to treat the subject matter in an appropriate way.

I also hate people that use any excuse to grub after money, but what worries me more is that this will turn into a big flag-waving excercise.

As you said, this will probably be flag-waving bullshit. And if Stone can stop shovelling cocaine up his nostrils for a second, we might get something worthy, but still...

Seen 25th Hour, by Spike Jonze? Good film, the use of "Ground Zero" was almost chilling.

Ultilmately, they're running out of material to make films from. Can we expect a Mining film - "yes, they're alive, praise Jesus!" "lol, not really!"? Maybe the next project for those fuckheads that made Team America...?

I kinda feel sorry for the people who pay money to be exposed to all this emotional coercion. almost.

I may be proved wrong, but I don't think they will be that large. I think most Americans will take an "innocent until proven guilty" approach to the project. They'll recognise that historically cinema has been one of the most effective ways for US society to confront traumatic events in its past. If done well it could almost be like mass group therapy.

Americans (and people in general) are also, at base, irrational creatures. There was some talk of making Peter Jackson change the name of "The Two Towers" because it would make people think of the World Trade Center. Granted, LotR came out much closer to the date of the attacks, but still.

That film about the Alamo (sp?) with Billy Bob Thornton crashed rather pleasingly. I predict this one will be huge, however. And no-one'll protest it, I can't see Stone making it a black comedy.

Indeed, the potential for this being worthwhile is entirely dependent on Stone being able to do "worthy". If not, then it's bad news all round.

Haven't we done this? Inability to deal with a serious subject except by taking the piss. Which would be alright, if not for the confused anti-liberal-oh-no-not-really stuff. And puppets having sex never did anything for me...

Both Norton's and-the-guy-playing-his-dad-whose-name-I-can't-remember. Not his best film, agreed.

Hmm can't remember... ah well let's leave it then. (Although I think T.A. was a only comedy because it was written by comedians, not because of emotional cowardice. Quite the opposite in fact)

I never said emotional cowardice. I just think a little less oh-aren't-we-all-anarchic-and-ruthless-ness would have been better. I mean, what was that AIDS show at the start about? A pisstake of Rent? And it wasn't particulary funny, anyway.
