 Wow, that is a first. Most Devy fans find that album to be waaaay to weird.

Devlab is definitely cool, but you need to really listen. It's a good album to play while reading or studying or something.

This is how I would score Devin's output:

STRAPPING YOUNG LAD

Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing - 75/100
City - 95/100
No Sleep 'Till Bedtime - 85/100
SYL - 80/100
Tour EP - 50/100
Alien - 85/100

DEVIN TOWNSEND

Ocean Machine - 99/100
Cooked On Phonics (Punky Bruster) - 80/100
Infinity - 85/100
Christeen EP - 85/100
Christeen CD Single - 50/100
Physicist - 90/100
Terria - 99/100
Live Bootleg - 70/100
Ass-Sordid Demos I - 75/100
Ass-Sordid Demos II - 70/100
Accelerated Evolution (DTB) - 80/100
Project EKO - 75/100
Devlab - 85/100
Synchestra (DTB) - 99/100

I think that covers everything.

Eh...I'd give that a 65/100. If Steve Vai could have stopped being "Vai" for a little while it could have been a really good album. "Deep Down Into The Pain" is still a sick fucking song, I recommend it to everyone! Devin's vocal performance is outstanding on that album, especially that song (the first time I'd ever heard Devin). It's amazing that at 19 years old he was that good.

Did you know he landed that gig by way of his Noisescapes demo that he sent out to labels taped to his dirty underwear? Somehow Steve Vai ended up with it. Hahaha.

I saw him live with Vai... I wished Vai could have been replaced (he just bores me)... Devin was good but, then, he almost always is... 8)

No! That's you guys! Your scores, plus the average of the scores at Metal-archives.com. If my comp wasn't retarded, I could link so you could see all the reviews those @M-A.com scores represent.

That good? I'll have to get this at some point, so far I own Accelerated Evolution and Terria by the man and love them both.

Absolutley, album of the year for me. I fucking love it! I disagree with the notion that "Vampolka" and "Mental Tan" are filler tracks. I hear a lot of complaints about "Vampolka" because it's strange, but that's what makes it so good...it's unexpected. And had Devin just included that in the song "Vampira" and not split the two I don't think people would be complaining so much. And "Mental Tan" is just a nice, short instrumental. They're both good, though, they add to the overall feel of the album.

Yes, whole album is unbelievably strong and taking those two tracks away wouldn't affect the album, but that doesn't make them filler. You could take "Vampira"—one of Devin's best songs ever—off the album and it wouldn't affect the album. It's THAT good!

Devin is the fucking man!

Album of the year? The year is still young
