Whats your favourite style of screaming? Be it DM grunts, or BM screeches, or hardcore shouts, or whatever else floats your boat?

And who are your all time favourite screamers?

Also, gimme your reasons why you like the style/artist so much!

the vocals of atmospheric BM. definitely the breathy, wraith-like shriek of Varg and the long line of musicians he's influenced. I think i'm the only person on the board who cares about Wigrid but Ulfhednir (the only member) sounds pretty much just like Varg, and plays a far doomier, introverted style.. and he fucks up his performance a lot which I find endearing.

hardcore vocals really put me off.. Isis is my favourite atmospheric post-sludge (etc) band simply because the vocals aren't so pointlessly harsh.

also this is unexpected from me but I actually quite Max Cavalera's barking style.. other screamers I enjoy include Jens Kidman, Ihsahn and definetly Barney Greenway's rumbling growl. that is fucking metal.

J.R. Hayes of Pig Destroyer for he is simply insane.
Varg for being able to sound sad and in pain while screaming.
Nocturno Culto for sounding so dead and out of this world.
Arioch and Imperial are probably the most powerful screamers I have heard.

My favourite style is obviously bm screaming but not like Dani Filth kind of screams, I need to hear the power in the vocals.

I second you on varg and barney and ihsahn.

And on hardcore and now metalcore screamers being shit. I can only take The dillinger escape plans hardcore vocals. thats the only hardcore vocalist/s i like. Jamey Jasta sucks. Do hardcore vocals have no impact to you? To me they sound all harsh and gruff, but like the vocalist i kind of wheezing(?), like theyre just pushing heaps of air out of their throat, and so the vocals sound weak.

i'm pretty open when it comes to vocals, and probably the only vocal style i don't like is grindcore.

some of my favourites:

serj tankian of SOAD
Byron Davis of God Forbid
The vocalist from Decapitated (forget his name)
Glen Benton is pretty awsome as well.

Harcore vocals prettymuch suck, the only one I've found that I can listen to is Johan Liiva.

Other than that I like death metal vocals with a bit of a rasp under them rather than a constant guttural tone.

And I'm quite partial to the odd BM shriek.

Varg rules, so does nocturno culto. I also like Grutle from Enslaved and the dude from the first arcturus album. (i find those two to be quite similar) What do you like better, higher pitch like varg or lower like the others?

Is it wrong that hearing a vocalist burps through a record makes me want to buy it?

I usually detest hardcore vocals, such as Jamey Jasta (the worst vocalist ever) and Roger Miret of Agnostic Front.

Generally, I don't like the burpy death metal vocals either, though I make exceptions (Lord Worm).

My favorite styles of screaming are the BM ambient shriek and death metal vocals that combine the burpy sound with out and out screaming.

My favorites include:
Peter Tagtren
Tom Angelripper
Mikko Aspa (DsO)
Pasi Koskinen (for his Shape of Despair works)
Lord Worm (the man isn't human)
JR Hayes
Johan Hegg
