Yes they are Symphonic Power Metal with a female vocalist. If you put new Sonata Arctica and Stratavarious in the PM label then Nightwish goes there for sure.

What would you call them? Not Gothic Metal.

gothis metal.

crap metal?

crap metal with a chick singer who moves her arms in a wavy motion.

*Loads shotgun*

Nightwish is not gothic metal.

And Tarja did not move her arms in a wavy motion. Within Temptation's vocalist does. A lot.

Holy shit, dude, what the hell are you thinking?

Within Temptation's only true decent and consistently good album is their latest one. Nightwish have been churning out masterpieces since Oceanborn (well Century Child may not have been a masterpiece).
Nightwish hold the yard stick in that genre. Within Temptation are good, i like them myself but feel they do kind of cross over to that "pop" sound, but nowhere near as much as Lullacry.
Within Temptation need to improve much more and Nightwish needs to turn into mush before anyone can say WT is better than Nightwish.

As for the topic....

I believe Metallica's "Black Album" may have gotten a fare way into the charts back in '91. Can anyone confirm? I know the post said power metal, but someone mentioned hair metal and mainstream bands...

Ughh well how does Hair Metal figure into all of this, that was all the rage at one point in the U.S. As of right now there isn't much of anything in the way of Metal that your average Dick and Jane are downloading on their Ipods. That's why I laugh my balls off when someone accuses a metal band of going "mainstream."

You mean to say that you have absolutely no concept of relativity.

I quite like Within Temptation. Like Evanescence but good.

Their first album is just a droning gothic snooze-fest from what I remember. Their second is about half good, half uninteresting. The third I haven't heard, but on the basis of the singles, and having the misfortune to see almost the entire tracklist performed live, is just pop-rock dreck. I wouldn't have thought it possible for a band like that to sell out (yes, those two words again), but they managed it.

Just because a band changes their style slightly, you have to call them sell outs...

well shit, loads of metal bands have changed their style slightly in their existence, they all must be sell outs in your book

Yes, you're right, when a gothic metal band changes their sound and image to match that of a certain radio goth pop band that enjoyed massive chart success the previous year and even goes to extent of ripping off their most memorable promo video practically frame-for-frame, its surely a coincidence, and their motives are purely artistic.

Within Temptation does not sound like Evanesence. WT's singer may have a popish voice, but they still have the symphonic gothic sound, close to metal than pop.
Not once while listening to WT, never have i said to myself "gee, they sound like Evanesence"...

I know what you mean (especially the video) but I just like their music. It appeals to the part of me that still wants to listen to daytime Radio One...

Whoa hold your horses man,I agree with everything else but Century Child is an in-fucking-credible album, quite possibly my very favorite NW album.

WT is a good band, except for Enter wich sucked balls. Mother Earth is a good album and The Silent Force.....well, they did sell out, but selling out does not equal turning to total crap IMO. It's a good album but it lacks lasting power. The first time I heard it I was blown away, but then it got weaker every time I heard it. Today I would quote it around 60, compared to 90 after the first spin. [/b]

Hey, dont get me wrong. Century Child is damn good, me personally, i preferred Oceanborn, Wishmaster and Once over it. Century Child has too many slow ballad type songs. Phantom Of The Opera is good, the trilogy is alright, End Of All Hope is good too. The best song for me is easily Slaying The Dreamer.
Still, i liked the other 3 mentioned before more than Century Child

Ja, Nightwish's power metal albums are their best. I just wish Mr Holopainen would realise that.

He is right, Silent Force (decent, nothing special) is a blatant rip off of radio friendly style of Evanacence.
