So far I'm not too crazy about "Fly". I feel this song picks up where "Night At The Opera" ended. Too many over layered vocals and the track is very danceable. I actually like Skalds And Shadows (Acoustic) better. That track reminds me of the old stuff from albums like "Somewhere Far Beyond", "Imaginations From The Other Side" and "Nightfall In Middle Earth".

The cover track is ok too. I still like Slayer's version better!

Ugh...I think Slayer's cover is very weak, just like the original. This cover, though, is pretty badass, very heavy. Me likey.

I'm pretty disappointed with this release. And SLayer's version is much much better.

I just got the EP today, and goddamnit, I knew they were gonna do this. They have totally forsaken their old sound...oddly enough, they took some of their old signature sounds and used them the wrong way. Everything is layered way too much. It doesnt have a genuine metal sound anymore. Now its like the Blind Guardian Philharmonic Orchestra playing dance tunes.

Skalds and Shadows is ok, but its no Bard's Song.

That is an extremely odd statement. The beginning 5 seconds is going to get this song constant "dance song" references. Nothing else in the song is like that. I admit the song has a very hard lean towards the rock side of things, but it's not a dance song, I don't want to get jiggy with it. Also, where is the Orchestra aspect here? There is virtually none of the layering that you suggest there is.

I think the song is excellent, a good dose of metal and rock, a great hook, great solos, pretty perfect if you ask me. The band isn't going back to what you want. Time to move on, sonny!

Does it have an audible rythm guitar, unlike anato? Would some1 who hated anato also hate this song?

Well.. listened today 3 times, but don't grow in me. Is good, but not really special. Fly is the best of the three, but is not great, it's more a filler that a hit song. Skalds And Shadows seems something listened a thousand times in the old albums, that's the feeling I've got with this song, it's so typical... And the cover is... well, forgetteable material for b side of a single.

I really hope that the album will be better. I'm sure it will be better... well, I hope...

I'm not really expecting much. It already sounds like another ANATO, and that album took forever for it to grow on me even a little bit, and still, there's only three songs I can still listen to from it. And then there was SIlence, The SOulforged, and Battlefield.

I believe some people here maybe expecting the wrong things from Blind Guardian, the single, and the upcoming cd. Blind Guardian has always been known to change their sound to certain degrees (with maybe the exception of BoF and FtB), and yes the biggest change may have occured when ANatO was released, which may have been a bit much for some people, but for most it seemed to fit fine with the natural evolution of the band. The guys from Blind Guardian have basically spelled it out that they will not be completely repeating the exact style of any one record in their back catalog. So long as this doesn't result in the Blind Guardian equivalent of "St Anger", I will keep on listening.

For me, "Fly" sounds like a mix of IftOS and ANatO. For those that weren't too fond of ANatO, I'd still recommend giving this a try as its got more of an edge to it, at least in my opinion. If you want more of the old Blind Guardian sound from the early 90s, than try Thomen's new project Savage Circus, which I also strongly recommend.

For me, Blind Guardian has only IMPROVED over the years. From the disastrous Batallions of Fear to the awesome A Night At The Opera, they have achieved a finesse within a metal frame that is virtually unmatched by any band out there. So, i have high hopes for their next album.I haven't heard this Fly EP, so i will.
