Last fair deal... was nice

Viva Emptiness was BRILLIANT

i'll be damned if i don't check this out. if it's anywhere near as good as VE i'm buying it.

when zyklon put their album out i'll go down to fnac or something and get it and this one and sadus.

And why, pray tell, are you giving such a crappy score to such a great album?

Because he's an Emperor! He can't do that shit.

For the person that commented on the previous album, I think this album is more like Last Fair Deal... than Viva Emptiness.

Ah no, I kinda agree with mista emperorblackdoom on this one, but I didn't add my score 'cause I don't really like any Katatonia. this sort of "dark atmospheric rock" just really leaves me underwhelmed - I don't feel either passion or musicianship shining through, so what's the point?

That's more the point I was making - if something's not to your taste, why comment on it just to bash it? I imagine that a staunch power metal fan would detest something like In Their Darkened Shrines, but there's no denying that if you enjoy death metal, you'll probably like ITDS and most of the rest of Nile's stuff.

Well, yeah maybe this style of music just doesn't appeal to me like it used to. It remains that I like Katatonia until Viva Emptiness. With that album I thought they sacrificed the atmosphere that made albums like Discouraged Ones and Last Fair Deal Gone Down good, in the name of heaviness. I'm revising my score to a 44 because I felt VE was a 30/100, and I liked this more than that one. Still, other than "My Twin" and "Follower", this album just passed me by without making any impression at all.

Also, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers with my score, just representing an opposing viewpoint. Obviously just about everyone loved this album, so I doubt my dissent will persuade anyone not to check it out.

I didn't think it was. I saw this album more as Viva Emptiness than Last Fair Deal. It's probably just me being me. I'll try the album again in about six months, then my opinion might will have changed.

Even though we're on opposing ends of viewpoint as to the quality of this release I do agree with you that it has a lot more in common with VE than LFD. But like I said in the review, it is a natural evolution of that sound so if you didn't like VE, I'd be surprised if you liked this one.

Thanks for giving your own take again. Like I said I will try this album again 6 months from now, but I'm not counting on it listening radically different to my ears.

Nah, not me. See, my opinion of Viva is the same as yours, but I actually really like the change. Although it took me a while to get into it. It clicked after a while, though. I don't hear Viva in this album. It's not nearly as heavy, it's laid back and somber like Tonight's Decision and Last Fair Deal....

Damnit, I was afraid that would be the case. I tried to listen to the samples on katotonia.com, but the site was down. (big fucking suprise)

I remember when i got my hands on 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' through a friend a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. Haven't looked back ever since.

This album is great. It's heavy, moody, melodic and calm all at the same time. Everything you'd expect from Katatonia.

Great review.

8/10
