For uni I carry around one of those little voice recorders in my bag to tape lectures when I'm feeling lazy. Anyway, tonight I'm driving home from work and my bag is sitting on the passenger seat. So I decide to fish out the voice recorder.

Now, I consider myself to be an ok singer. If I ever had the chance to do karaoke I always thought that I would be at least good enough not to totally humiliate myself. So I'm listening to Nick Cave on the car stereo and I decide to press record on the little dooberlacky and sing along to "Where the Wild Roses Grow". You can't imagine my heartfelt shame and horor when I played the tape back. What came out of the little speaker was a sound that was like a dying porpoise. Tomorrow night I will attempt Guns n Roses. If that comes out just as bad (or worse) then I'm going to be really sad, because I always thought I could do a great rendition of "Mr Brownstone".

You should try singing in front of some people, preferably friends. Then you'll understand just how good you are.

Your voice always sounds different when you record it. I sound like fucking Chris Barnes and I remember thinking "Do I sound like this to other people ?".

I know, I sound like a friggin' child molestor. It scared me away from singing in public, not that I was going to do that anyway, but you know what I mean.

my friend's band put on a show once, covering songs and shit, and i filmed it for them. during their cover of "the trooper" my "ohhhhhhh ohhhhhhhh ohhhhhhhhh" (you know) comes up and ruins the whole thing. i never realized i had such an unpleasant voice.

Maybe that's why you get mugged...

One of my friends really likes my growl and wants me to be in his band. I don't think it's very good-I'd upload it but have no idea how.

also make sure you don't fuck up your voice doing it. there are techniques for that and all, look into that.

I can record them with headphones, I do that on MSN regularly, I have the sound recorder...Yousendit?

Take deep breaths, and pull the sound out from your diaphragm. That is how you do a true growl. If you don't, you'll put undue strain on your vocal chords and sound like you chew gravel.

Be careful Pete. I know people who lost their voices for days. Check the internet for tips on growling, I'm sure there are some.

I can relate. I decided to record myself singing "Heart Attack In A Layby"... I never thought I sounded absolutely horrible, but I really did.

Thank God I'm taking Chorus next year, maybe then I can get some proper training.

To all the growl tip people-I pull it from the diaphram anyways, or it sounds shit...It sounds shit anyway, but less so.

How do you know when you're "pulling it from the diaphram" (its almost sexual) and when you're not?
