So, Ken doesn't like it, eh? Good review.

Edit: just so I know, Lateralus is the one with the weird see-through biology artwork, yes?

And Craig isn't funny any more.

Thanx for bringing this to my attention, I still haven't got it, I'm sure I'll like it. Good review.

Out of all of Tool's albums, I find this one to be there weakest. Too much filler, weird experimental stuff going on. Not enough consistency of any kind other than it being pertty boring

I'm interested to hear this. To me Tool is a band that can right some great songs, but I have a hard time sitting through a whole album.

Suits you, sir.

'Tis still a suckfest, even weaker than their so-called 'acclaimed masterpieces'. On this album, Tool have truly defined the sense of the words "pretentious pseudo-experimental wankery".

Hmm, I seem to be on the opposite side of the fence to you and Ken on this one. Aside from the interludes, of which Lateralus has a similar amount and Aenema has in spades, I didn't find any filler. Which tracks didn't you like? I think it's confusing that they had what are essentially intros (Lost Keys, Wings for Marie) as seperate tracks, but it may be that people would have been put off buying an album with only 7 odd tracks, not knowing the running time.

(looking forward to a long and interesting debate about this one :) )

Zad: Yes that's Lateralus

Radagast: Just maintaining continuity, they've always been labeled that on this site courtesy of Jay, and to be honest I wouldn't like to attempt to stick 'em in a genre.

Brahm_K: Maybe the next Tool album due in 2012 will be a thrash effort, cross your fingers.

This album is fucking bullshit, 5 fucking years and they give us 4 songs.

40/100.

I think Progressive Metal would be quite appropriate, no? Maybe Progressive Alternative Metal.

Well 7 Songs, most well over 7 minutes in length. With a tremendous variance in each.

I wouldn't really consider Tool "Metal" per see. More "Progressive/Art/Space Rock."

I really need to purchase Aenima and Lateralus someday. Afterwards, I'll purchase this. Undertow I already own and for some reason never really got into. A lot of people say Aenima and Lateralus are better.

Of course, Maynard's work with Perfect Circle crushes ANYTHING he ever did with Tool.

Don't take my score the wrong way, the album is not a bad album, but I find it to be more of the same, too many songs remind me of older Tool songs. To me, this album is a band treading stagnant water. Maybe I need to continue listening, but it hasn't done anything for me yet.

Never been a fan of tool. Only like say 2 songs from all of their albums. I too, cannot sit through a whole album, it is very challenging trying to listen to their music. Their too experimental and it takes the fun away from just trying to sit back and relax with their music on.
I wont even bother hearing this album, i know i will not like it. I never considered tool to be metal anyway...i cant even seem to put them in a genre, they have made up one on their own...

This album was huge disappointment. Wait 5 years for this! It just seems like they had to put out an album, maybe Keenan is to focused on a Perfect Circle or something. Maybe I am being too hard on them because their last to albums were such masterpieces.
The album case is really cool but other then that 70/100 they lost their edge, creativity and their musicianship seems not up to par with past efforts.

The only song on here I see a major similiraity with their earlier work is Vicarious, everything else encapsulates the Tool sound (Which is a good thing IMO) but strikes me as very different in construction and tone. I see shades of Reflection in some tracks such as Intension.

It does make me wonder why bands are often criticised for changing their sound and yet here you criticise Tool for not doing it? Is it because of the expectation of the band coming up with something completely fresh? If so then I kinda understand. I' m happy with them keeping their overall sound, if they changed it, it would either become so experimental it would descend into unlistenable garbage or become more mainstream and we'd have A Perfect Circle.
