bah... Portuguese championship ended today.

Porto were crowned champs 2 weeks ago, but the fight for second place (=direct access to the Champions' League) was still on... and Benfica lost it :(

what an annoying season - we beat Porto on both home and away games, we defeat Liverpool and Manchester United, but we couldn't beat a demoralized Sporting on our own stadium or defeat bottom of the table clubs.... it's so annoying to see your team promise so much yet deliver so little.

I was thinking just the same thing. Dare to have a fortuitous victory over Rovers earlier in the season to knock us out of the Champions League hunt? Karma's a bitch, no?

look at what this genius figured out:
Quote:
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Ken Bray, a theoretical physicist with a doctorate in quantum science, has some advice for any player taking a penalty: Aim for the top corner.

It may sound obvious, but Bray's advice is backed by scientific research that he says can help players in everything from taking free kicks to saving penalties.

"Science is important in terms of winning matches," said Bray, author of a book on the science behind soccer called "How to Score."

Bray has analyzed memorable games over the past 50 years and applied research in physics, biology, computing and psychology to the beautiful game.

Using biomechanics to calculate the absolute reach of a goalkeeper diving to try to save a penalty, Bray has identified an area near the posts and in the top corners where the goalkeeper cannot reach as the "unsaveable zone."

"If a player were to place the ball in those regions, which are 28-30 percent of the goal area, there is not a sniff that the goalkeeper can do to get across to them," explained Bray, from the University of Bath in England.

He advised goalkeepers to move before the kick is taken because if they wait, the ball will be halfway to the goal before they can react.

He said that where the striker places and points his standing foot is a good clue to where the ball will go.

"It's been shown that in about 85 percent of cases the direction in which that foot points is the direction of the shot," he told a news conference in London.

Looking at Sven's England Squad.

If Rooney and Owen don't recover, we're looking at a front line of Peter Crouch and Theo Walcott. And no other options. Not even Wright-Phillips....

omfg this sucks

I still think England has an awesome defence and midfield, maybe you guys will get somewhere if you can find a way to score.

That's what makes it so depressing for me.

We have an awesome defence (maybe the best centre back and the best left back in the world :P ) We have an awesome midfield, and we had an awesome strike force. Now it sucks, and I can see the best squad England's had for decades and decades crumbling and being wasted thanks to injuries. I genuinely believed we stood a chance until Rooney went down...

Sven seems to have made a really bad decision though... I mean, there is a very good chance Owen and Rooney are both going to miss games, and all we have to fall back on is the reasonable Crouch, and Walcott- who is 17 and hasn't played one game for Arsenal this season. It's all very well Sven saying it's a "gamble", but taking Rooney is already a gamble... We need a fourth striker that we know can do an adequate job- not someone that just shows a lot of undeveloped promise. I would have chosen Defoe, I think.

What else does Darren Bent have to do to get near the team?

exactly. like i said before, Portugal had a mediocre attack, but a great midfield (deco, figo, ronaldo, rui costa...), and it was enough to solve most problems.

of course it won't make England favourites, but it'll be quite useful for them, i'm sure of that.

---------

what's wrong with Wright-Phillips? and in championship manager (lol) i remember there was this guy called Kevin Phillips, from Sunderland i think, who was a fucking machine. i suppose he's not the same in real life :X

maybe Scolari sent Ferreira on a mission to injure as many english players as he could :P

Kevin Phillips was a scoring machine several years back but he never achieved anything at international level, and now he's sunk off the radar.

There's nothing wrong with Wright Phillips, I wish he was in instead of Owen Hargreaves (WTF?). And yes, I would also prefer Bent to Walcott... It's bizarre that the leading English goalscorer this season was left out for a 17 year old that's never been off the bench for his club.

Looking at the line-up, my hopes just plummeted. And surely we can do without Beckham? I can just see the prat missing another penalty... :(

i used to have a really funny pic in my computer with beckham and jonny wilkinson:

JW is holding a rugby ball and says to Dave "and then i just kicked the ball over the bar to win" and Dave thinks "ball... bar... over.. win".

I can see the logic behind walcott. Hes said to be a lot faster then Henry (believe it or not!) and from what i've seen of his Southampton days he's a good finisher. The logic is with a midfild of lampard, beckham and gerard we have probably the most accurate passers in the world that can seek out walcotts runs and use his pace to get in behind defences. Couple that with Crouch's ability to hold the ball up i can see why he has been chosen. But i don't understand not having Wright Phillips, he would make and excellent sub. The type of guy who can change games.

I think he's out because he plays exactly the same position as Lennon, and Lennon's been better recently... I suppose that must be it.

But seriously... Walcott has literally not played 1 minute of premiership football... Literally!
