We've all seen seen them when driving down the road. And we all know how the average cop sees them as the greatest invention since the lightbulb. Now what does everybody else think of them? Do they really make the roads safer or do they simply make innocent motorists more paranoid?

They were installed here about 4 years ago. The funny part is, the cameras don't have film in them here. The film was deemed too expensive, and the belief was that the mere presence of the cameras would stop motorists from running red lights. They don't.

I think we need more surveillance in this country. Sorry. If you want to bang your girl or wack off or pick your nose or do something illegal, do that shit at home! If a camera is going to keep assholes in check outside where they can harm me, I'm all for it. I'm so sick of taking off at a green light only to have to slam on my brakes because some asshole felt that just because he saw the light green a mile away means that somehow he still has the right to go through the intersection.

Fuck those assholes.

Hah, there are some weird machines standing on top of my head every time I stop at a red light but it's hardly a camera, because it doesn't film anything. Nobody cares about them and they don't work anyway, like Eternal Idol says. Fuck it!

They do somehow give a 1984 feeling to the city, cool but, I dunno, it's against freedom or something, so Dogan the hippie says nay to the government spying on us.

Those cameras don't stop anybody from running red lights though. Most people are too stupid to even notice they are there.

I live in the UK from 2000 to 2003. Although people drive like complete morons over there, we got tickets all the fucking time! I only needed one before I smartened up.

I just realised that probably didn't make much sence.

The exact number of CCTV cameras in the UK is not known. A 2002 working paper by Michael McCahill and Clive Norris of UrbanEye, based on a small sample in Putney High Street, "guesstimated" the number of surveillance cameras in private premises in London as around 400,000 and the total number of cameras in the UK as around 4,000,000. The UK has 20% of the world's CCTV and one camera for every 14 people.

so this is why

True, but if they start getting tickets in the mail it would lessen it. I've noticed as the years have passed that people are more and more brazen about it to the point of running red lights as long as it didn't turn red more than like 4 seconds before. That's bullshit.

Years ago people got pulled over for the shit, I've seen people fly through yellows right in front of cops. Fucking lame. You start mailing people $100 tickets and they'll think twice the next time that light turns yellow.

I can see Ken's point though. If it stops the shitheads from doing stuff, why the hell not? And there's a big enough market in detectors...

It's perfectly legal to proceed through a yellow light. As long as you break the plane of the intersection before it turns red, you've done nothing wrong. I fought a ticket this way and won.

As far as tickets go, I live in a town that is extremely wealthy from the oil business, and $100 is pocket change to the majority of people here. It plain doesn't work. They take their 2006 SUV and blow through the light anyways, as scary as that is. People are tremendously stupid, and a camera doesn't change that.

Not in MA. The law states that you will stop unless it is dangerous to do so (i.e. slamming on your breaks, etc.). You're not allowed to speed up.
