I get a circus vibe from the whole thing, from the style and tone of the keyboards, and it all seems a bit jokey. Im gettin into it now, but my first impressions really turned me off of it.

Yes, I know what you mean. That is because the riffs are thrown to the back and the keys at the front. The Whole album is flled with amazing riffs, believe me. Smoke a Joint and then listen to it, you'll be amazed what you have missed my friend

+1. Never really appreciated Mayhem. But the only thing we enjoy from them is their cover of Venom's 'Whitching Hour'. It's probably the only Mayhem song we like and we play that song EVERYTIME we jam. Maybe it's just because it's fucking easy.

Me too. It's allright, but the keyboards are way to dominating which gives the whole album an unpleasantly synthetic (and cheesy) feel. Besides from that I find it a little too 'easy'

The Beatles as Sir. W said. When you strip the hype away they're quite bland.

The only power-metal I can find pleasing occasionally is Windir :P

Also I find Temnozor incredibly overrated.

I don't pay attention to what instruments are to dominating etc., I just listen and let the atmosphere come out.

Me too. I just think the dominating synths spoil the atmosphere. It makes it a bit too 'obvious' (in need of a better word).

I find since I started reviewing stuff that I listen more to individual instruments, so I can say 'the bassist is teh sux' or whatever. It is rather hard to catch anything but the synths, but it's still pretty darn good.

I still think the album is allright, but well.. It's hard to explain what spoils it for me. It's like those overblown synths is shoving the atmosphere up in my face instead of letting me take the journey myself. I don't really know how to put it.

I agree with EisenFaust. For me its like they are trying to be serious, but with the synths mixed so high it feels to me like im listening to a band who are taking the piss, not a serious BM band. The synths are 'jokey/cheesy/silly/light hearted not heavy and dark' (i cant think of the right word dammit!). I prefer IX equilibrium.

IX Equilibrium? Having some kickass songs doesn't make it better than ITNE!
Well, ITNE makes it feel like I'm somewhere cold etc. The full blown over the top gay descriptions of BM you find on M-A so frequently. The only time the production or instruments in any way annoyed me was when I first got it and I though every song sounded the same, never having heard much BM before.

There is no way IX is better than Nightside.

My favourite Emperor album is, despite the disturbingly horrible production, Wrath of the Tyrant... Haha, I'm so tr00 I don't even like myself.

I love that album. I like to imagine I'm sitting on Ihsahn's couch watching them play. For being recorded in a house it sounds pretty good.
