Taxes in many European countries serve a redistributional purpose which makes the tax rate higher. It is a conscious decision that some countries choose to spend their wealth that way. Another reason for the taxes to be high in some countries, is that the schools, universities, healthcare etc. is tax financed. Those expenses would be paid from ones own pocket if they weren't financed like this. Bottomline: If you're not taxed you'll have to pay it yourself. Expences are the same even though the method of payment is different. Tax financing just opens the possibility of redistribution.

America is more hated on the news and as a feel good reaction these days for the rest of the world. For every idiot American I see I can find one from the UK or Germany. Actually the coolest people are usally from Sweden or the Netherlands believe it or not.

I don't think the US is the greatest place on earth, but compared to most places we seem to have our shit togather. It is just a huge country with lots of different ideas, cultures, etc.

Anyways, we are all going to be ruled by China in about 20 or 30 years as soon as their old guard communist die off and the fully embrace their love for money and not giving a shit about anything else.

Well, first off, he's really not too far off, believe it or not. Yes, America does produce more pollution at the moment. Seeing how we are basically a continent, of course your pollution levels will be lower.

But China and parts of Africa are on a crash course with industrialization, and if they don't adopt any environmental policies, America's pollution production will pare in comparison. I doubt they will adopt said policies on their own volition.

Nobody here is denying that. What we are saying, however, is that just because it's a better place to live than Ghana doesn't mean it should be exempt from responsibility for the environment.
