Interesting idea. I guess I agree with you, it is quite unsettling.

I have countless nominees but the four that stand out as the most depressing to me are:

Abyssic Hate-Suicidal Emotions
Katatonia-Dance of December Souls
Dolorian-S/T
Esoteric-The Pernicious Enigma

Looking at it seriously, a lot of nu-metal is depressing. I had to turn off some Deftones that came up on Pandora before because the guy sounded so fucking miserable.

Suprised that nobody said "Discouraged Ones" from Katatonia, much more depressive then the Dance. Brave Murder Day is intersting as well. Down and Frozen from Sentenced. The Cure - Pornography. Antimatter's - Saviour, Virgin Black is like that too.

Amnesiac by Radiohead is pretty depressing. Especially the remake of Morning Bell (the song literally sounds like a soap opera).

Other nominees include Dirt and Tripod by AIC, In Utero by Nirvana, Edge Of Thorns by Savatage, and The More Things Change by Machine Head. TMTC, in particular, is odd because even though it probably isn't supposed to be sad/depressing, it just has that atmosphere about it that I can't quite put my finger on. Especially Struck A Nerve and Down To None.

For me the most depressive albums are Stabbing Westward's

Wither Blister Burn & peel and Darkest Days

how can it not be depressive when an album starts with those lyrics :
"I'm such an asshole
I'm such a stain
I just keep fucking up again and again
You crawled inside my mind when you crawled into my bed
Said everyhting I've ever longed to hear
So perfect, so alive, once inside you sucked me dry
Used me up and left me here for dead "

or better yet:
"There are times when I'm just a shell
When I do not feel anything for anyone
All I feel is hollow and bruised
Used up and misused
Forced to be someone I don't want to be "

I know Stabbing Westward is not emo but those lyrics are emo lyrics. And they're gay. "Oh you used me, oh I'm forced to be someone else because I have no balls, I'm such a loser"... crybaby fags.

by the way he's not crying he's basically blaming himself. I suggest you check out the whole lyrics of "I Don't believe" and "Darkest Days" to get the context correctly.

The Album Darkest days is a concept album, he basically gets dumped by a girl, goes through a couple of phases:

In Christopher Hall's (SW singer) own words:
"The first four songs are about the various ways in which you mess up; the next group are obvious relationship type songs that go from being hopeful to the answer to hope to 'they're still hanging around; the ambient 'Drowning,' 'Desperate Now' and 'Goodbye' are when you've hit the bottom of the barrel; and the last four are emerging from the dark and sticking to what you believe in -- the climax of the roller coaster."

I disagree. Discouraged Ones and Brave Murder Day have decidely more depressing lyrics, DODS has some of the most depressing riffs I've ever heard. Just the music alone makes me sad. Pretty depressing band in general really, except for Viva Emptiness, which was a pile of ass.

I dunno. It's cool if you like it but I possibly couldn't like lyrics that are written after a break up with a chick. My brain isn't designed to receive that kind of stuff.

Metal doesn't depress me. The only albums that successfully can do that are rap albums. Immortal Technique's Revolutionary volumes 1 and 2.

Who, me? No, I really really love those albums and they really do make me depressed. I didn't mean all rap does that to me, it's just that the only two albums that I can think of that make me depressed happen to be rap.
