I think it's the internet. I remember a story on NPR several years ago about a Sumerian document that researchers had translated. It was written by a teenager who was complaining that his parents wouldn't buy him stuff, even though his friends' parents bought them stuff. Teenage idiocy is a historical constant. The internet just nurtures and exposes it.
