I've heard some good things about Electric Wizard but never seriously listened to them before. What would you guys say is a good starting point?

Either start with Come My Fanatics... or Dopethrone. They have virtually the same sound and quality level. The later stuff (Let Us Prey, We Live) is just not up to those standards.

Nice review Adam! Well written and aptly capturing the essence of this magnificent album. The combination of crushing heaviness, dark emotions, psychedelic soundscapes, claustrophobic vocals and an enormous depth of sound makes this album one hell of a journey. The heaviest parts might seem trampling at first, but if you know how to listen you can almost get lost in the colossal depth of the riffs, this record has to offer. I think the bluesy parts, including The Hills Have Eyes, work really well on the album. After some of the more crushing passages, they offer a little break that almost feels uplifting... Like getting rid of a backpack full of lead or something...

The sample I sent ftr is the title track (glad you liked it, by the way). It is quite representative for the sound of the album, but you have to listen to the whole record to really be dragged in by the atmosphere. Check it out people. Those of you who appreciate these things might want to lean back on the couch and light up a fatty before pressing play. :)

Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics… are indeed very similar in sound, style and quality, but Dopethrone has a somewhat more raw texture. I like Dopethrone the most, but if you are easily overwhelmed Come My Fanatics… might be the best place to start. I'd still go with Dopethrone though.

Good review, good album :)

I never heard Come My Fanatics... however, although I hear many good things about it.

I've tried that Weird Tales song out of curiousity, and although I didn't I would like it, I did! Good review by the way... Very good.

Yeah, this album is quite unique. I like it, although the vocals are a bit strange

I like how the entire album feels like it's one giant, backfiring, pinging engine, car-crushing semi-truck, especially the moments where the rythym falters momentarily to fall into itself, only to come back into full stride even stronger than before. It just doesn't stop. Metal powered by pure torque. The only doom metal I like, and it's a real crusher.

The first track left me breathless. After the first minute, I turned the lights off and the volume up to really focus on this album. Listening to this album in the dark left me with chills. The bass, the guitar, the distorted vocals just blared out of my speakers. I'd compare it to a religious experience. I'm amazed by how this album just grabbed me out of nowhere. And I got the shit scared out of me when my cat jumped on me midway through Weird Tales.

It's been well over ten years since this album was released.
It's time for this album to become a classic on this site.
