I was one of those that first noticed this band when they supported Opeth. They really stood out then, but I never picked up any of their records. Seems like this could be a good place to start.

Been a fan since "All Flesh is Grass", good to see they are getting some well deserved attention. Nice review.

Hmmm...never heard this band. Sounds interesting, Amaran, you say? I'll check them out! :D

Interesting, despite the female vocals.

I don't know what this album sounds like, but the first two sound nothing like Amaran just for a warning. Amaran is just good Heavy Metal with Fem vocals (great band), this is weird, avantgarde, angry as fuck Metal at least these 2 albums. I think he was just using Amaran as a reference point as another fem fronted band with some balls, not a sound alike.

Leee is entirely correct as to how I used the Amaran reference. Stylistically, they are not similar, but if you want fem fronted band with balls, Madder Mortem is getting there, and there no Arch Enemy growls or shock factor ("I didn't know a girl can sing like that").

Avantgarde and angry - no question I would agree with these two descriptions.

I listened to the three songs on their website last night and I really liked them, but I didn't hear much I would classify as Avant Garde. Still, I'm very interested in picking their albums up now! :D

That is just because you absolutely refuse to agree with me about anything outside of Moonspell......ha

Like I said I don't know this one, but from Alex's well written review I would say I am sure it is avantegarde because frankly nothing else sounds like them. All Flesh is Grass is really freaking abrasive stuff too.

It may be there, just not in those three songs I heard. They were very good, though.

very interesting band...
Actually I think they fall a bit into the Goth Metal category, and it's not just becouse of the female vocals

Been listening to this album all night long. partly because I'm trying to write about it, but partly because it's absolutely awesome.

You know what, i have been spinning Mandylion and Nighttime birds a lot from the Gathering and the parallels are def their between them from that period and Madder Mortem. There is serious heavy shit going on in Nighttime Birds. Madder Mortem just took it further and made it angrier. have had albums by both a long time now, suprised I didn't draw the conclusion sooner.

Yes. Both masterpieces in my opinion, although Desiderata is less doomy and less gothy, and more hard rocking.

I downloaded this again when I heard it mentioned in a group of bands that were pushing metal forward recently, and I like it a lot more than when I first heard it... one of the few metal bands I've heard where the female vocals aren't either boring or cheesy.
