The moron with a computer is me

So I just got a wireless Broadband adaptor today. First of all, it didn't work at all. It was like 10 minutes just to load the google homepage. This was when I had the thing plugged into the USB port right at the back of my computer, and the computer was facing right into the wall. (so the USB adaptor was one inch from the wall).

Then I rotated the computer 90 degrees so the USB adaptor is facing right into the centre of the room, and it seems to be working much better.

So my question is, is it probable that just that rotation and putting the USB adaptor in a more open space was the only thing that needed doing? If not, what other measures can I take to improve the performance of wireless broadband. Any suggestions at all are cool because I am totally new to this type of thing...

So were talking like a wireless modem for a laptop, that works like a mobile phone? If you move it of course the coverage will change, cos in some places the coverage fluctuates. And yes, walls do fuck the signal up. Just think of it as being any phone.

It's for a Desktop. It fucked up again shortly after I posted that last message but now seems to be ok again.

It keeps saying stuff like "Signal Strength: Very Good", and then when I click on Internet Explorer it just goes "Finding Site..." for ages without doing anything.

But is it totally wireless or just a wireless modem? Ie, is it connected to a phone line or does it work like a mobile?

It's totally wireless.

We have a router downstairs and I just bought a little mobile USB thing that just plugs in and is supposed to pick up the signal from that router.

Seems to be working at the moment *crosses fingers*

I guess location would matter. Put it closer to the router if possible

The walls the signal has to go through would affect it, and some cordless phones can affect wireless internet stuff. Heaps of shit could screw with the signal.

Maybe my mobile could fuck with it... Sadly it may be a while before I find out because nobody calls me

Why don't you move your router to a more central location?

Is your USB adaptor USB 2.0 ? , is it plugged ina usb 2.0 port?

this can effect the speed although it still should work fine qith a 1.0 port.

Your phones (Cellular, house) could be messing with the signal depending on their working frequency.

well usually it will say on the product you buy.
as for if your computer supports USB 2.0:

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.


Click the Device Manager tab.


Click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Note: If Universal Serial Bus Controllers is not listed, there is a problem with the USB controller or the USB controller is not enabled in the computer's BIOS. Please contact the computer or card manufacturer for updated drivers and/or for information on how to fix or enable the USB controller.


If Enhanced Host Controller and/or USB 2.0 Root Hub Device is listed, then the computer has USB 2.0 ports.

It's a good thing I did some research on Wireless Internet a few semesters ago for some networking project.

Yes, your transfer rate depends on the space your in. Remember, your internet is working on waves. If you put your device in an enclosed area, it's quite hard for the waves to reach the device. You need to put it in an open area. Near a window or a door would be good. I forgot the name of this wave, but they are impeded by walls and solid objects. Even if your in a room, the connection you get is not as good as in an open area, because the walls block these waves.

And you have to understand that these are the similar waves to your satellite tv. SO you will experence bad condition pending on the weather. Transmission will be poor when there's heavy rain.

It's quite hard since you own a desktop. But try putting your PC somewhere open. It helps. How far is your router anyway? Try to put it closer to your router.

Thanks guys... The router is two storeys downstairs so it may be that. I shall try to move it closer although it will mean maybe getting another cable

Yeah thats definitely the problem, eloctromagnetic waves when interrupted by objects agitate the object molecules producing heat (like in a microwave) wich transfers into an energy loss, so the more obstacles the EM wave encounters the more energy it will waste, reaching your computer with a very low amplitud signal, try placing your PC close to your router and see if the problem fixes, if not then let us know.

Oh and just one thing, different kinds of routers use different kind of transfer protocols requiring special wireless adaptors, make sure yours is under the same transfer standards as your router.
