How do you listen to music when you lift? Do you listen while you lift? What sort of headphones do you use? Do you have an arm holder for you MP3/cd player or do you use one of those waist holders?

I'm getting a membership to a gym when I move out here in Oct. and I need some advice. I used to go with a buddy, but now he is in a band and goes to school full time so I will rarely get a chance to have somebody to talk to while I work out. Music is going to have to help me keep moving. Anyway, any advice?

I don't do a whole lot of lifting, but I run and used to have these sweet Ultimate Ears headphones that were amazing. They blocked out pretty much all of the noise and the sound quality is amazing. Depending on how you look at it, they're fairly cheap at $100. But, I won't be getting another pair anytime soon...

When I run, I usually just hold my iPod in my hand, but for lifting I don't know. An armband or beltclip should work just fine.

Here are the earphones I had, except in black to match my iPod :). I'd definitely recommend them--they would have repaired the breaking if my mom hadn't lost the receipt (I got them for my birthday).

I got some headphones like that, they were about the same price to. They'e awesome, i got really pissed of when i could hear an ambulence pass about 5 feet away from me, came close to ruining a song. What a dark day that was. But ness, just put it down you bills, tuck it under the elastic, its cheep and easy.

losing your workout buddy always stinks... i've lost three during a single year... not my fault though
I don't listen to music other than the crappy techno that are played in the gym, though. It's easier to workout that way, plus i get fed up with my own music if i have to listen to it for 7 hours a day

The iPod case I bought came with an arm band, which works well. Sometimes the headphone wire gets snagged on the weight machines, but it's not that big a problem.

That was my main concern.

You can put your headphones through your shirt to prevent to that. Works well for me.

That's brilliant. I'm going to do that the next time I work out.

I did it today when I went running and it worked great. I didn't get a face full of wire everytime I took a step.

I just got back from lifting weights, and it definitely worked better. Not great because I wear my iPod on my arm and there's not a whole lot of space between my ears and my upper arm, but better.

Glad to see you guys like the idea, heh heh. I find it works a lot better if you hook the clip to your belt, and if you're still hindered then you should try putting the headphones up through the back of your shirt, so they just go over your shoulders and into your ears. If you like to wear it on an armband, I would suggest bundling the loose cord up in a rubber band or something like that.

I do the same thing, and then I always listen to Rocky IV soundtrack. Best stuff to listen to when you're working out. Training Montage, Hearts On Fire ... makes me wanna climb a snowy mountain :D

I don't have an iPod (nor do I plan on buying one), so I usually have my portable CD player running when I do my cardio workout. I HATE how (unless you're holding it with your left hand) my discman constantly skips while I'm running. Though when I'm stair climbing, it works just fine.

As for lifting weights, if you're using a machine (like a prone-leg curling machine), you could probably listen to your iPod or CD player while lifting. But if you're using dumbbells or barbells, you really shouldn't because you run a real risk of crushing it if something goes wrong. Plus it distracts you.

So when I'm literally "lifting weights," I usually just endure the alternative/pop music that plays in my gym (though yestarday I heard a classic Green Day song that I admittedly liked).

By the way, starting a sort of "sub thread," here are IMO some good albums to listen to when lifting weights:

Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Megadeth - Youthanasia
Sepultura - Chaos AD
Anthrax - Stomp 442
Helloween - Better Than Raw
Dream Theater - Train Of Thought
Alice In Chains - Dirt

Notice most of these choices are more mid-paced power/thrash metal.

I just noticed the other day how mid-paced power-thrash works best for working out. I have been listening to a lot of Savatage at the Gym.

Dragonforce rules as workout music in general, but I've found that Catch 33 by Meshuggah is great for lifting, especially if you're using machines. It gets your whole body into that mechanical rhythm.
