So ... what covers do you like?

My favourite has got be Sonata Arctica's version of "Still Loving You".

Other mentions go to SA's version of "The Wind Beneath My Wings", Gamma Ray's "It's a Sin", Edguy's "Hymn" ...

I'm not a big fan of metal bands covering metal songs, I have always the feeling that the original is better.

Not neccesarily Metal, but Faith No More's cover of "Easy Like Sunday Morning" is swell.

An awesome cover indeed! You gotta appreciate them taking a slow ballad, not even a power ballad, and turning it into a balls out power metal track! It rules.

I love Still Remains' and Lullacry's covers of "Head Like A Hole." Both make it totally awesome in a completely different way; both nothing like the original.

Check it: HEAD LIKE A HOLE by STILL REMAINS and LULLACRY :dio:

The originals are always the best. But not all. When I listen to cover songs, I hate it when they cover it exactly, note for note etc (get what I mean?). I prefer the bands to cover it in their own way. It shows the creative side of them. Many people including my friends bashed Six Feet Under for their covers of ACDC and other classics. Well, frankly, it's not as good as the original for sure. But heck, I loved it. They made heavier and 'brutal'. They're just being original. That's the most important thing I see in covers.

Oh and yes, Therion's cover of ABBA's 'Summernight City' is to me, the most creative and original cover. 'Fly to the Rainbow' was also good, just it became weird after the 4th minute.

Yes, Therion's cover of Summernight City is amazing.

Here are some that I have:

DISPATCHED covering "The Final Countdown" (Europe)
ATROCITY covering "Shout" (Tears For Fears)
THE GALLERY covering "The Sun Always Shine on TV (A-ha)
VISION DIVINE covering "Take on Me" (A-ha)
AT VANCE covering "Eye Of The Tiger" (Survivor)
VISION DIVINE covering"The Final Countdown" (Europe)

The last two sound too much like the originals, therefore I prefer the originals. The coolest would have to be The Gallery's cover of the famous A-ha song ...

I'll try to update this post with some links so you can download it .. if you want
:)

Life Of Agony's cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds is awesome. And Beseech's cover of "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" by ABBA also rules, such a groovy tune!

LIFE OF AGONY - DON'T YOU (FORGET ABOUT ME)
BESEECH - GIMME, GIMME, GIMME

Thoughts?

I like Gamma Ray's "It's a Sin" a lot, but when I think of non-metal songs covered by a metal band I think of one album that was reviewed this week, The Forgotten Tales. “Barbara Ann,” “Surfin USA,” “Long Tall Sally,” all great covers.

The Meads of Asphodel - Wonderful World

"I see newborn graves
Dirt dimmed with steam
Open womb flesh
Death and disease

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see ethnic cleansing
Pain beyond belief
Whole nations murdered
Sorrow and grief

And I think to myself what a wonderful world

The silhouettes of murder
So pretty in the sky
Where rapists stair and wonder
At children passing by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying ‘How do you do’
But they’re really saying
Hey, Fuck you!

I see men talking peace
Words full of shit
Eyes welled with war
Poison and deceit

And I think to my self what a wonderful world

Yeh
I think to my self, what a wonderful world.
Oh yeeeeeeaaaaaaah!"

Holy shit I just have to hear that song!

A lot of great ones already mentioned, I'll add Where Were You Last Night (Ankie Bagger) and Over the Hills and Far Away (Gary Moore) by Nightwish. The latter is probably my favorite cover of all time.

I just had to copy-paste grandbazaar's post of this cool cover. I remember being 13 and listening to the original on the radio over and over ... The cover isn't metal, sounds like heavy rock, but it came out very nice !!

It sucks, dude. No improvement at all over the original.

The Beseech version of Gimme Gimme Gimme is very cool though.
