Well, Converge and Mastodon both broke fairly new ground, so in that sense you could say they were progressive bands. Isis on the other hand play half-arsed sludge bollocks.

I guess, but I found it odd how practically everyone was calling Mastodon prog metal, when the adjective isn't even mentioned around stuff like Protest the Hero or Converge, who are just as progressive if not more so.

EDIT: oh yeah, i was also confused because to me the main thing that seperated Mastodon from bands like Burst, The Ocean, or Keelhaul was that they were less proggy/more straight to the point/more riff based than the rest of them

How are Converge progressive, assuming we're calling, say, Isis, progressive?

the songs Phoenix in Flight, Jane Doe, Thaw, You Fail Me, etc. Also they have odd time signatures, complex instrumental parts, concept albums, and irregular song structures :P

and I wouldn't say Mastodon broke new ground =\

In the strictest sense, these things don't make a band progressive. Technical, yes.

Which is why I don't really think of Mastodon as a proggressive band.

Yeah but pretty much no one calls Converge a progressive band, whereas everyone is calling Mastodon one.

It's all relative to notoriety, by which I mean Converge aren't as mainstream, therefore casual fans by the bushel aren't calling them "prog" as much as Mastodon. However, I still don't think calling Mastodon "progressive" is a ridiculous statement.

I've finally come out of my Mastodon enduced hibernation of three weeks (where Blood Mountain is the only thing I've listened to, at least five times a day), I've concluded this is the album of the decade. Just vision youself climbing a mountain (a bitch ass supernatural mountain of Conan the Barbarian standards), and going through all the challenges of feeling lost, tackling unforseen challenges, experiencing nostalgia of warmer days (old timers, tell me that the end of Sleeping Giant doesn't remind you of Faith No More in their prime), the optimism of nearing the peak and the euphoria of reaching the summit. IT FUCKING ROCKS!!!

This album is metaphorically as hard as climbing a mountain, hence why it's not as accessable as their other work, but that's it's charm because it's more rewarding when you get it. Mastodon are the most unoriginal original band I've ever heard. Adding to their armoury of influences of Sabbath, Neurosis, Maiden and Metallica, there are new sounds reminicent of Kyuss, Voivoid, Tool and certainly something from Mike Patton's career in there. It works, it so works!!

Perhaps I should get out more...

If he read Terrorizer it would have been similar, more complex but saying absolutely nothing about the music. I would not say album of the decade man. That's gonna go to the crusade!!!!![/Metal Hammer]

Sure Metal Hammer pointed out the 'climbing blood mountain' imagery, but I feel it man. Like Leviathan, if you try to picture yourself as one of Ahab's crew, you can smell the sea salt, hear the creaking bows and feel the desperation in the fight between a man and his grail!

Perhaps I'm not the most original unoriginal message poster on this site, but I'm lost in the fight for sounding unique whilst tilting my cap at other views to form a conclusion that can appeal to all and yet so few (can you see what i did there!). The Crusade? Is that Trivium you're on about?
