Suppose you have a normal life with work, sleep, and stuff. If you are very lucky the time left to listen to music is 4 hours/day average. That is, it would take a full year to listen through a collection of round 1500 CDs. However, since you normally spend far more time with actual favorites it will take rather 5 years (Pareto pinciple assumed) until you pull out any buried CD again, if at all. Since you will buy new stuff during that time, +10 years is more realistic. So what's the point of keeping it? Is it just a hunter-gatherer mindset that is behind it? Or is it against possible value enhancement of potential collectors items? I couldn't answer these questions myself, so consequently I'm going to sell round 80% of my collection. It is hard work to sort out those that really mean a lot but I think it is worth it. There is too much abundance everywhere and sometimes it does good to jettison, doesn't it?

Why do people collect Beanie Babies? So they can sit on a shelf? That mentality is partially similar to those that collect music, but you can enjoy music far more than Beanie Babies, or any other collectable such as that. Sure, I may not listen to a band all the time, maybe just once a year, but it's there if I want to listen to it, right?

Yeah, I have many records that I rarely play but I would never lose from the collection. You never know when you will feel the need to hear something again. Plus if I have visitors I need a wide variety of albums on the shelf so there will always be something I can rip their face off with.

You regretted selling them before, no? I think you don't need the money really badly, do you?

Those were LPs of which some became collectors itmes. This won't happen for CDs, save for some Space rarities which I will keep anyway since they are on my playlist frequently.
Rio's answer was predicible. We too often think what might be somewhere in an unpredictiable future instead of what is in the present. It's not about the money, it is more a symbolic act to focus on what is really important now. If you think I'm out of my mind, you are very right, my friend.

This argument is flawed because "now" is a fleeting moment ALWAYS! What happens in a month, year, or more, after you've gotten rid of all those CDs, you find yourself wanting to listen them again? Is re-buying a bunch of shit you once owned a symbolic act of "now," or a confirmation of lunacy?

I always find myself staring at my cd collection trying to decide what to put on, and I usually just go for one of about five favourites. But every now and then I bung on something that I haven't touched in ages (like Sign of the Hammer) and think "cooooool".

I don't agree with your definition of "now", but I stopped to have metaphysical discussions in the internet and especially in metal forums. I don't understand why you are so sure that I will find myself wanting listen to them again. I was extensively browsing my collection and found stuff I haven't listened to for ages. I turned off most of those CDs after a few minutes but there were also real gems (e.g. Eberhard @Misha) which I practically forgot about because they were buried by all that crap. That's the flipside of excessive collecting. BTW, I never will convert to downloading.

How about the road in between? You put all of those cd's you do not want anymore in cardboard boxes and you put them away in some basement of yours. When, after two years, you still haven't touched them, you can sell them anyways.

This whole topic made my head hurt and I had to look up 7 words in the dictionary. If you are thinking about it that much that answer is no or you would have already sold them....

dunno, even if i had tons of cd's i'd never listen to a single one of them, because mp3 is sooooooo much more convenient.

but if you don't need the money then just leave it there on display. i'd only sell a cd if i thought it was outright crap, but since i don't buy cd's without a first listen i'll never have an outright crap album

I remember one way to eliminate clutter is to get rid of anything you don't expect to use in the next year...

financialy it doesnt make all that much sense to get rid of them because you will loose so much money , like 80% of the value.
Even if i didn't listen to them forever you still have them.

Well I think you're gonna regret. Just put it this way, if you're not listening to it, nevermind....at least keep it to show that you at least supported these bands by buying their CD's.
