I'll be going in a few weeks, october holiday. And I plan on returning with a shitload of cds. So, I ask anyone who knows: What's the place to go? Any specific great place? Underground store? Anything? My dad'll be spending loads of time at the sibelius, and we might even meet Apocalyptica. Suck on that!

That's awesome. I'm planning to spend a few weeks in Finland in January; probably mostly in Helsinki.

Rgh I'm jealous. I've been wanting to go there for the sole purpose of coming back with loads of CDs. and maybe a wife, who will mother my finnish children who will then undoubtedly allow me to have my dream of a melodic death metal family band.

Sweet, MR people in Finland! A shame I study here in the East so it would take extra preparations to get there to meet someone.

For records there are of course the shopping centers like Stockmann and Sokos that have pretty good overall selections. Free Record Shop is a bit like a Finnish equivalent for Tower Records, only a lot smaller. Still can have very good reserves of various genres, metal included, if you happen to go there at a time when they have just stocked up.

From independent shops I would recommend Keltainen Jäänsärkijä, which has excellent selections in metal and rock especially.

All of these shops are very near the Railway Station, smack dab in the center of Helsinki. I usually end up flat broke in them allready so I rarely end up anywhere farther. If I come up with something new or you want to ask anything like directions or sumthin' just hit me.

But if one wants to come to Finland with the purpose of unloading the bank account on CDs, then I would not go to Helsinki, but Tampere. Swamp Music = store of the Gods. It aint that huge but sweetGsus a heaven of about any genre of western music and then some. It has a separate store for second hand CDs and vinyls just a block away, which is about as good a quality but cheaper. I'd be in jail for credit card fraudulations if I went there more then twice or thrice a year. A very worthwhile consideration if youre coming to Finland and don't really care where in here youre gonna spend time.

*writes down* Hm...I should start compiling a phrasebook, just so I don't forget anything important.

"Missa on Keltainen Jäänsärkijä ja Swamp Music?"

Keltainen Jäänsärkijä is good. Music Hunter is another cool record store in Helsinki. Good selection (they even have a shelf dedicated completely to shred and guitar virtuoso stuff!) and you can find some real gems in the used stuff.

Fuck Free Record Shop. Even Anttila (Finnish general store) has a better selection of music these days.

"Scandinavian black metal bands are gay because they are screening, "It's only winter." In summertime, it's nothing but sun! So these people are so full of shit. They don't know what they are saying. Of course, you don't have a clue because you haven't visited that shit. But once you go to the fucking Norway in July, you will be like, "Where's the fucking darkness? Where's the snow?

What you get is, you are going to have something like 85' there, along with the sun shining and lots of mosquitoes sucking your blood. It also proves that they will not be in the forests because there's so many mosquitoes! They are going to suck your dick! No! It's true! I am not pulling off your leg! That's the truth."
-Mika Luttinen

It's not exactly cold in the autumn either. The midwinter is cold as fuck, of course.

Oh, OK. That's what happens when you live somewhere where it rains most of the time.

all right, now I know where to go. So, next question.
What should I under no circumstances return without that I could only find there?

Maybe not only from Finland, but I give you Two sets of five letters.

TAROT = The greatest pure heavy metal from Finland ever, very potent on any scale you put forth. Can't go wrong with Marco Hietala on vocals. Get their whole discography, dammit!

STONE = The pioneers and years after their disbanding, still Kings of Finlands scene of Speed/Thrash metal. Especially recommendable are their self-titled debut and No Anesthesia

Add to that SARCOFAGUS. The first Finnish heavy metal band. Their debut was just rereleased on CD. It costs just 5 euros.

The price of a CD in Finland is generally 10 to 20 euros.
