Yeah I do but the thing I live with gives me evil looks whenever I put them on so I haven't listened to them in a while. And their songs being ridiculously catchy is something they overcome by being otherwise awesome

If you consider simple, predictable, and repetitive good...

He means catchy in a GOOD way obviously there is a bad side to everything and you seem always to be digging for stupid arguments by only looking at the negative side.

chocolate is good but if you eat to much it isn't great. Catchiness is good but the music still has to have substance otherwise not good.As long as it isn't too sugar coated catchiness is good end of argument!

Even if he means catchy in a good way, saying that all music that isn't catchy isn't good is retarded. :D.

Not all music has to be extremely catchy to be good, but all music has a level of catchiness no matter what, so I wouldn't say he's totally wrong on that one.

Not really. If it doesn't "catch" the listener then it's just noise.

Mahler is not catchy, not good music?

That's pretty much what I was going to say. I wouldn't take it to that extreme, but the fact is that music - whether happy, sad, angry, deep, simple, progressive, fast, or whatever you're looking for - exists for people to listen to and enjoy for one reason or another. The best way to make this happen is to find a way to make that music "catch" listeners. Avoiding catchiness is what immature musicians who think they're more mature than everyone else do to be labeled "tr00" while claiming they despise labels.

Simple is not necessarily bad either, and to think so is just simple-minded.

Exactamundo. Stop trying so hard, noodles.

I disagree that music has to be catchy to be good, but there's also nothing wrong with a song being catchy provided it has substance behind it.

Both wrong as usual. Catchy is often a positive characteristic but it is not a prerequisite to music being good. There is good music that is not catchy just as there is vice versa.

I agree with Rad and Rio. I see that I'm the first "May...be" vote. I think I can't predict if I'll like a song just because it's catchy or not. It's just not the decisive factor. Or maybe it's not even a factor at all.

If the album doesn't stick in my mind in some way or another, the odds of it seeing my CD player again are usually pretty slim. Catchy does mean more than having a sing along chorus. A riff can be catchy, a bassline can be catchy, and so forth.

What it comes down to is that the main purpose of music is entertainment, and if the music has no entertainment value, it's worthless to me. Music can have substance AND be entertaining, despite what some retarded bands try to convince people.

Music definitely can be technically "good" without being catchy, but when there are bands out there doing both, why should I settle for just half the equation? All of history's most remembered music, whether it be simple, fun songs or the biggest classical pieces, are all catchy in some way. It can be anything from vocals to guitars, but for me, something has to catch on or I will be bringing it to a resale shop.

That's incorrect as usual. If you like something—and this is completely subjective—then it is inherently "catchy" to you. If it were not you would not like it.

You lose. :)
