It looks pretty interesting. It's nice to see a different subject matter being tackled by Hollywood for once. The problem is, it's guaranteed to bomb thanks to Mel Gibson being batshit insane. He should have left his name off of it.

Seems like Mel Gibson is a strange person for the job, him being religious and all...

I don't get what this is about. Oh well, I'll probably see it eventually and find out...

I want to see this one, too. I thought it was going straight-to-DVD after Mel's drunk "Jewish sugar tits" incident.

I've heard this movie is in a different language and will be subtitled. Any truth to this? I've seen it written nowhere, and the trailers have no dialogue.

I've been deliberatly avoiding most of the reviews that are coming out because they contain a lot of spoilers. But the general gist is that A) this movie is fucking brutal, and B) this movie is fucking awesome.

Set in the Mayan Terminal Classic Period (about 900ad), the civilisation is on the brink of collapse as overpopulation, constant warfare, worker exploitation and environmental degradation are straining the patience of the citizens.

The plot concerns a bloke named Jaguar Paw, whose village is one day attacked by one of the powerful Mayan city states. He is taken back to the city as a captive for sacrifice, but eventually breaks free. What ensues is a jungle chase movie - where Jaguar Paw is persued by a whole bunch of Mayan warriors as he tries to get back to his pregnant wife. From what I have gathered, Jaguar Paw eventually gets sick of running and starts hunting the warriors himself.

Filmed entirely in the Yucatec Mayan language, played by the locals of the area, and featuring very limited cgi effects, Apocalypto is set to be the most realistic historical-based movie ever.

Really? if thats the case they must have filmed somewhere close my town, its cool that its spoken in mayan, but the name Jaguar Paw just seems wrong to me, its like making a movie about and Eskimo and name him Igloo Warrior instead of something like nanook, his name should have been Pelaná instead.

I knew an Eskimo named Polar Bear Nipple. I swear.

The only thing I dislike about subtitled movies is that I seem to miss a lot of the visuals while I'm fucking reading! I like what they did with Brotherhood of the Wolf—filmed in French, overdubbed with English. It looked a little weird, but it wasn't distracting; not like subtitles tend to be.

After watching CRAZY without subtitles I think I might start watching subtitled movies without them the first time around and seeing how much I can understand just from context/visuals/tone of voice.

I on the other hand like subtitles and hate dubs, there is nothing like watching a movie in its original language, you get used to it, i mean the voices are a major part in acting, you miss a lot when its dubbed.

Totally agree, about 75% of the time I would say it totally ruins the experience, and I fucking hate when people I know wont watch a movie just cuz it involves reading. Gay. Subtitles >>> Dubs.

Do you guys watch a lot of movies with overdubs? Hehe. Aside from old kung fu flicks I've only seen one movie with English overdubbed.

Here in Holland, basically everything in another language has subtitles, I grew up with English cartoons (only catoons for the really small ones are overdubbed). It trained our reading and before we were able to read, we were familiar with the language. I think it explains the fact that most Dutch people speak a bit of English, while a lot of Germans and French suck at it. In Germany, everything is overdubbed. I got so used to subtitles, I pick up mistakes in tranlating a joke or something while I can watch the movie without any problem. I've seen some eastern movies that were overdubbed in english, in my opinion, overdubbing completely ruins any credibility a movie has, as well as the atmosphere. It's just so fucking ridiculous. Overdubbing is for lazy people with lower a IQ than how many fingers they have.

it's the same here Misha, every little overdubs. on the other hands the french and the germans overdub everything, and it shows (at least with the people i've met from those countries).

I totally agree with you! Overdubbing is just totally lame and stupid. Ok some people might need it because they can't read well but it should only be limited to things that only they watch like south-american soap operas and teletubies and stuff like that. Fortunately, both in Sweden and Greece where I spend most of my time, only the children's zone is overdubbed and sometimes some other crap that I couldn't care less about.

Overdubs is for stupid people who need to die with a battle axe to the breain while shoving their dick in a light socket with somebody peeing on their feet with a dull knife being shoved through their eye all while their penis gets chopped off and fed to them so they can shit is out and eat it with the vomit they produced while watching two fat chicks have sex with a double dildo on top of a pile of fat chicks eating the person's oldest child and then having shit all over the place and piicking up their shit and throwing it at the dub master forcing him realize the error of his ways of the dub factor and realizes that he has a low IQ. A low IQ. If you watch dubbed movies you have a low IQ? Shut the fuck up. Get off your damn high horse. I have a friend who watches dubbed kung fu movies all the time.

EYEROLL!!!!!!!

Anyone seen Brotherhood of the Wolf? Those overdubs were really good. The only one I had a problem with was the Asian dude's overdubs. Thankfully he did little talking. But the overdubs were done well, and they fit well.
