So the computer said to me the other day "a new version of Windows Media Player is available, would you like to install it now?" Being the easygoing sort of guy that I am I say "Sure, why the heck not?" and click yes.

That's when the problem's started - after installation, I get a message saying that since I have a possibly-counterfeit form of Windows installed that I can't validate the media player and therefore can't make use of it. Nor can I use the old version of the media player as it has been replaced by the newly downloaded version. I've known for a few months that I was operating without an 'offical' form of Windows (I had no idea until a message popped up about it one day, I'm assuming the guy who built the PC made the decision), but I'm still not prepared to fork out my hard earned cash to 'validate' the system and get access to new downloads.

Is there anything I can do to get around this? I'm open to any suggestions - cracked Media Players, ways to get the old version back, sneaky ways to validate the system, anything at all really.

You can just uninstall the new version and find an older version of media player? You can install something like DivX or Media Classic and it will play all the same things and just do your rips from Itunes.......

I haven't run an illegal copy of windows in many years so don't know what all they have done to prevent that lately.

I had recently downloaded the new Windows Media as well and I just didn't like the language in the "privacy" settings so I looked around some tech forums to see what others were saying. My worries were confirmed so I deleted it.

Dude, you got it all wrong and messed up. If I was not going for lunch in 5 mins I'd stay and explain but I can't. What people should understand is that by Microsoft making it easy for the non-techies, this has helped all the rest in countless ways.

Cheers! I'll try this when I get to my home PC. I tried doing a system restore, but it keeps saying 'system restore failed because no changes have been made.' O RLY? Then why can't I play my fvkking CDs?

I like Winamp, but only for playing mp3s. I use media player for CDs and videos.

No iTunes 'til I buy an ipod (nggh), which may be a while since I just found out I'm losing my job.

you don't need an iPod to use itunes, and it's available for free (legal and everything).

I am just fucking around.....but.......there was nothing quite as fun as spending 2 days to install a game like 11 or 12 years ago. Editing Config files, have to run boot programs from a floppy to get a game going. It was like a game within a game.......

How is that fun? Losing two days of your life just to install a game sounds like a torture to me.

No he has a point, it was not the exact definition of fun but there was a deep kind of satisfaction after you made it work, like you were really worth it and after all your effort and trouble you could finally get to play that game. But since I got my first computer at 1986 (a "home" computer, ZX Spectrum 128 +2) things have only improved in all kinds of ways. And by introducing simplicity and ease of use, Microsoft (and not only) made both the computer world and the internet a more interesting place to be. I admit that I sometimes miss the elitist status of those early years but I'm trully having more fun now than before.

Of course, were you to use a proper version of Windows and not associate yourself with the Pirates, then none of this would've happened.

Anyone else download IE 7 yet? They've stolen the tabs idea from Firefox.
