How about the track "Total Eclipse"? If I'm not mistaken, it was not on the original release, at least in the US release. I believe it was a B-side. Kick ass track as well!

I was going to mention that song... it should have on the records and not Ganglands which is a poor track

Seventh Son... remains my all-time favorite Maiden though

I'm one of those who love Losfer Words and Back in the Village; I think Powerslave has absoloutely no filler. Even the weakest song, The Duellists, has that incredible middle guitar section.

+1

Also, I think Gangland is powerfully underrated. Ok it ain't a classic, but its a fun song.

IMO, I think 'Gangland' is an awesome song. And somebody even mentioned that 'Invaders' was not a strong as well. Well try playing it on the guitar or bass. Knock yourself out.

Invaders, in my opinion, has an awful chorus. It's silly, not catchy, and ruins the awesomeness of the verses. The verses, from a musical stand point, is very aggressive and is absolutely killer from a guitar stand point (I don't disagree with that), but the chorus. ughhhh

My thoughts exactly.. Invaders has so much potential, the verse and bridge totally rocks but the chorus just falls flat.

As for the album, it should be a classic by anyones definition. Maybe not the most solid of the Iron Maiden albums, but the impact this album had at the time more than makes up for that.

It is quite a weak chorus, they used the same idea again for Aces High but got it totally spot-on that time.

I also feel the chorus could have been better. But I think the rest of the song was just great. The intro itself was a killer to start off the album.

Strangely, i always view this album as a bunch of different songs, whereas other Maiden albums like Powerslave, Seventh Son or Piece of Mind, i see as an album, and mostly listen to them all the way through.

In terms of songs, NOTB = :dio: :dio: :dio:

But it always bugs me that it has a strange lack of flow or concept.

However it is the definition of a classic, for sure! :dio:

It's a masterpiece, but the 4 albums that came after it were even better. As I mentioned in another toppic, five masterpieces in a row for Maiden, something that IMO can only be reached by another band if Kamelot's new record goes for another 90s score.

I must agree with everyone else on the status that The Number Of The Beast is most definatelly a classic. Where the difference lies is where it ranks among the other Maiden albums.
Everyone has different opinions and tastes with all of Maiden's songs and I'm no exception. I for one think Invaders, Gangland and 22 Acacia Avenue are rather average tracks, while Total Eclipse and The Prisoner are fairly good. The best tracks on the album just has to be Run To The Hills, Children Of The Damned and Hallowed Be Thy Name. While the title track rounds off the album nicely.
