I was surfing channels at home when I hit HBO and there was this dude doing stand-up comedy. Since I love stand-up, I began to watch it. His name was Dane Cook.

Is Dane Cook a well known comedian around the world? I had never heard of him, and after I watched his stand-up, I wished it stayed that way, because that guy is a disgrace to the stand-up world.

All I saw was really poor jokes performed by some good-lookin fella and 90% of the time the camera insisted on showing how the audience was packed with pretty 18 year old blondes who screamed everytime the guy finished ANY sentence. This guy is like the Britney Spears of comedy. All looks and marketing, no content. Watching him only made me want to pop in my Jerry Seinfeld's "I'm telling you for the last time" DVD, to see how REAL comedy is done.

The HBO special isn't that great. Dane Cook is a good comic, regardless of what anyone tells you, but he gained fame way too quick for his own good. I used to see him locally and the dude was fucking hilarious. I'm talking piss-your-pants funny. But then something weird happened with him and MySpace.

He's probably the most successful person on MySpace because of MySpace. He basically created a page for himself, and just chatted with people. If someone wrote to him, he'd write them back. He'd have real conversations with people, treated them with kindness and respect. Next thing you know, he's a MySpace staple, where everyone had to have him on their friends list. The dude has 1,824,609 fucking friends on MySpace!

So, like overnight, he's a comedy superstar! He went from charging $20 per show to $80 per show; he got himself a nice little series on HBO called Tourgasm, that followed him and a few other comics around on a little tour; he got a couple of movie roles in those campy, National Lampoon's type comedies; he got the big HBO special, Vicious Circle; and he continues to interact with the fans via MySpace far more than most celebrities, big or small, out there.

Basically, I just don't think he had enough material to make that leap from minor comic to superstar comic. He had plenty of great stuff for the club circuit; but he literally became HUGE overnight. And, sadly, because of that, his quick rise to stardom—something comics rarely achieve; and if they do achieve it, they often struggle for a long, long time to get there—he has gotten himself a fairly large fanbase of haters. I can understand the confusion, like yours, if your first experience with him was that HBO special; wondering how the fuck he got an HBO special in the first place; but he seriously has the talent to be an amazingly funny comic. He just kind of skipped over that period where comics build and build a repetoire of funny shit. Dane had to probably use a lot of his not-so-funny shit just to be able to do a full 90 minute HBO special.

But, you're free to dislike him.

Funny as hell. His sense of humor is so fresh. Other comedians hate him as a comedian b/c they feel he isn't a comedian at all. I laugh (piss my pants laugh), but he can get old. Two hours is waaaay to much for any comedian. What I just said makes no sense.

I've seen funny short videos of him but he seems to base his jokes only on exaggarating stuff that happened. But I haven't seen a whole video or anything.

Yes, my first experience with him WAS the HBO special. Maybe I bashed him too hard in my previous post, but damn that special is not funny at all. Just a bunch of teen-stupid based situations, like stuff that happens when you drink at parties, when you invite girls to your place ... Very dull stuff. And the camera focusing young hot chicks in the audience laughinh their asses off when all the guy said was "I masturbate sometimes". When I saw this, I thought "Well, that guy is like teen pop. No content at all, but he has the looks, he has marketing, etc".

If you're saying he CAN be funny in other occasions ... well ... I would like too see some youtube links, I just love stand-up as much as I love metal. I spend a lot of time watching George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and such dudes on youtube.

Yeah I got like 4 minutes in.

Then again the only stand up comedian I've wanted to watch for more than 5 minutes has been Bill Hicks =\

Hmm I often watch stand ups for hours, one of my favourite things is awesome standups. I love Hicks because he is so righteous, but I don't find him to be as funny as some people do.

Does anyone know Ross Noble?

I like observational humour plenty but my favourite for it would be someone like Peter Kay. I do go to parties but I don't enjoy them because whenever I do there's dudes like that guy there that think they're hilarious :P

Russel Peters is also awesome. most of the jokes i saw were based on him impersonating people of different ethnicities, and he nailed every single one of them. the african one was particularly excellent.

he's indian, btw (as in "curry indian", not "sitting bull indian").

Dane Cook is a comedian for those of us that like ridiculous jokes. Seriously. TONS of people think I'm fucking hilarious, my friends try to convince me to do stand-up; but many, many people also think I'm totally not funny. It's the same thing with someone like Dane Cook. His shit is ridiculous, and coming from angles few comedians come from.

I guess you're right. It IS ridiculous.I watched the youtube vid noodles posted. Didn't find it funny AT ALL. I mean, the guy spends like 4 minutes on how we throw up at parties. Making noises. Dull as hell.

But hey, did you notice the crowd? I bet there isn't ONE PERSON in the crowd who's above 25. Notice the close-ups, 90% of the time is really HOT chicks laughing their asses off and the guy isn't saying nothing special. I smell marketiiiing ... It's like that Seinfeld joke about the commercial with the gorgeous bikini model next to a 26-set box of tools. The guy is just there thinking "Hey ... if SHE is next to the box of tools ... and if IIII had that box of tools ... I wonder if she .... I'm gonna get that box of tools !!!". Is this what young boys are thinking ? Hey, if that hot chick is laughing at Dane ... and maybe if IIIII laugh at Dane ...

I'm just mentioning the hot chicks in the audience thing beacuse I like searching youtube for standup vids and the only vids that showed frequent close-ups of people in the audiente were Dane Cook vids.

I was watching George Carlin's "Complaints and Grievances", man there are some real good parts in it. Watch him talk about traffic accidents : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG4UWCfhmEw

Part 5 is also hilarious : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ir-5rWOSNk

It must be hard not to laugh at that. I mean come on, he starts crying. Everybody cries when they're puking. I don't care how tuff you are, you'll have tears rolling down your face. It may not be b/c you're sad, or in pain, but when you puke you cry. And him pointing that out makes me lolololololol all over the place.
