I guess you're right. It IS ridiculous.I watched the youtube vid noodles posted. Didn't find it funny AT ALL. I mean, the guy spends like 4 minutes on how we throw up at parties. Making noises. Dull as hell.

But hey, did you notice the crowd? I bet there isn't ONE PERSON in the crowd who's above 25. Notice the close-ups, 90% of the time is really HOT chicks laughing their asses off and the guy isn't saying nothing special. I smell marketiiiing ... It's like that Seinfeld joke about the commercial with the gorgeous bikini model next to a 26-set box of tools. The guy is just there thinking "Hey ... if SHE is next to the box of tools ... and if IIII had that box of tools ... I wonder if she .... I'm gonna get that box of tools !!!". Is this what young boys are thinking ? Hey, if that hot chick is laughing at Dane ... and maybe if IIIII laugh at Dane ...

I'm just mentioning the hot chicks in the audience thing beacuse I like searching youtube for standup vids and the only vids that showed frequent close-ups of people in the audiente were Dane Cook vids.

I was watching George Carlin's "Complaints and Grievances", man there are some real good parts in it. Watch him talk about traffic accidents : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG4UWCfhmEw

Part 5 is also hilarious : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ir-5rWOSNk
Perhaps the camera man was just focusing on the hot girls, and not the fat, bi-focaled, acne ravaged, and just all around homely people that could have been in the back somewhere.

The notion that we're laughing at Dane only because hot chicks are is pretty ridiculous. I like "sophisticated" comedians, too, but I always get a kick out of the ones who use ridiculous, over the top humor that relates to things I've experienced.

That part about handing a stranger your camera, and they act like you just handed them a bomb and asked them to disarm it.

"Yeah, push it, it's the button on the top right, where it always fuckin' is, since the beginning of time"

I think that's funny because I can relate to it. That is exactly what happens when you hand a stranger your camera and ask them to take a picture of you and your wife/family/friends.

Exactly! He points out the obvious and exaggerates it.

Man I didn't like that Robin Williams one either... I had heard loads of people telling me how original he was and then as soon as we start what do we get? Jokes about GWB and Michael Jackson

American comedy is one of my favourite things in sitcom/cartoon format but I can't relate to many of your standups... perhaps it's a cultural gap or whatever.

CANT SAY I GET IT

Does look pretty lame from the first 1 minute 48 seconds

Yeah I got like 4 minutes in.

Then again the only stand up comedian I've wanted to watch for more than 5 minutes has been Bill Hicks =\

Hmm I often watch stand ups for hours, one of my favourite things is awesome standups. I love Hicks because he is so righteous, but I don't find him to be as funny as some people do.

Does anyone know Ross Noble?

Ross Noble is big in Australia. Hilarious guy! :D

Demitri Martin's pretty good too.

Dane Cook would be better if he wasn't so over-the-top. I can tolerate over-the-top-ness, but he usually just ends up sounding obnoxious. That, and his big crowd of teenage followers are even more obnoxious than him. It's especially annoying when I hear kids around school say one of his jokes and everyone within a five-foot radius of the joke will burst out laughing like they're about to bust a gut or something.

Of course. Stand-up is one of those art forms where you need to feel some connection or sense of community with the performer, like you can relate to them, or have something in common. How can you do that if they have a massive following of trendy assholes?

Easy. You ignore them.

But by saying just ignore them you completely miss the point I made about

And that makes no sense. You can't enjoy a comic unless you like his fans? In the past, when I've made this sort of claim that people here dislike In Flames and nu-metal, and such, more because the mallcore fans suck, I've had everyone slam me and my opinion.

Yet here we are discussing comedians, and somehow fan brotherhood is necessary? Pffft. You and the comic is all that matters.

Ah, so it seems it comes back to everyone ganging up on you again for liking nu-metal

I have no problem with people being put off bands because of their fans. The problem I have is when certain people offer that as a hypothesis as to why their opinion is in the minority, and repeatedly using it as a stick to beat people with.

Plus, I didn't say you had to like his fans strictly speaking. But yes, it is important to me when watching a stand up that I feel there is empathy between him and I as an audience member. That's harder for me to do when the audience seems like the kind of people I have nothing in common with, and that he is talking to them rather than me. I'm not suggesting you should agree with this, probably I am in the minority for feeling this way. My favourite comedians are often the ones that I feel the most empathy with, rather than the funniest.

It's easier not to be put off by a band's fans because when you're listening to the album you can just pretend they don't exist, but when you're watching a stand-up comedian perform it's generally live, meaning they're like right there oh em ge.

This has nothing to do with that at all.

Again, this has nothing to do with anything I said. But feel free to throw more nonsensical insults my way.

Hey, I rarely go to shows because people are idiots, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the band; and it wouldn't keep me from enjoying the show if I did go, unless I planted myself in the middle of the pit. And in that case it would be my own fault. If people bother me at a show, I ignore them, or I ninja chop their neck, and then I go one enjoying the show. I do the same thing at movies, and I'd do the same at a comedy show. The crowd means nothing at all when it comes to me and the band/movie/comedian, etc.
