I usually think of myself as just a regular guy. A regular guy who really likes heavy music. But you are correct about how there is a slight sense of alienation with being a metalhead - probably because (at least here in the States) real metal is basically a niche genre, loved by litterally a few loyal and dedicated fans.

Ben, I really liked that editorial. Sounds like a helluva story you wrote, and it reminded me of some stories that came out of my 7th grade creative writing class. ... Sadly, this statement. "I learned quickly that being yourself, and truly meaning it not just saying these words but following them and living by them, and using the power of imagination and the forces of creativity, is not something that society appreciates and rewards," is all too true.

For me, there was never any kind of revelation or single moment where I felt alienated from everyone else, etc. I've just always been me and that has never really coincided very closely with what anyone else was doing, and I think my taste in music is a reflection of that, not a reaction to it.

I remember that I was turned on to metal by a gradual progression through musical cronology (beatles to doors to led zep to sabbath), and that being brought up in a household where both parents listened to classical music, I enjoyed the likes of Wagner and Mozart, and the emotions that they bring were only found in metal.

I started with iron maiden, manowar and blind guardian. (and some more nu-metal acts). But i have been progressing and expanding my musical taste. It was a natural progression.

I was always obsessed with music, and metal was just the first scene I discovered on the internets, and since I already liked Opeth, Tool, Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend, and Ministry at that point I guess I was fairly open to it so I just dove right in

yeah, I considered myself a fairly normal person growing up with friends from all walks of life. My interest in music was definitely not compelled by anything, but more of an organic progression as many have already said. Before high school, I was never big into music for some reason (probably because most of it was crap). Finally, I started getting into modern rock like Kenny Wayne Shephard, Lenny Kravitz and Creed, which led to my Dad and I bonding a bit over music, who actually turned me on to Sabbath...the rest is history of course. :-D

Great editorial btw Ben!

Awesome editorial Ben! I think the situation is different here, as metal is not looked so bad upon. Anyways, you have fellow metalheads, although your friends are far away from metal as well. So are mine, and so am I now. Problem is that there are far less people that share my taste in music, they are hardly existing. It's a good thing that I do not always feel the urge to show what I listen to, and there's always the internet for when I do. I found a couple of likeminded, or actually one and a few more that come close. Maybe the difference is that you found refuge in metal and I do not need refuge, like you at this moment. I saw metal as an addition, you viewed it as part of your life, like a style you lived.

I'm just a normal guy that happens to really like metal. To tell the truth, if I hadn't found this site I'm not sure if I would even be into metal

It's actually extremely weird that I listen to metal given the circumstances of my life...but I'm glad I do because I love metal now

Great editorial, though, BTW

I'm not by any means normal but I was never the weird guy in school or anywhere else.

Great editorial Ben. Hit the nail on the head for most cases there.

That is disturbing. The story you wrote for your exam doesn't sound that bad. That would definately not attract attention here in the way it happened for you. Basically when I was in school in one english lesson ( about 10 years ago) the teacher decided to read out a story one kid did for his or her exam and it was much more disturbing than that. Can't remmember the full details but it was about Cerburus coming up to earth, converting all the dogs into hounds of hell and going on a killing spree. He even added graphic descriptions of people getting killed ( things like "Cerberus clasped his jaws to the necks of his victims and ripping out their throats"... see what I mean). I remmember it finishing off with the final few victims trying to seek sanctuary in the church but to no avail, Cerberus and his legion still got them.
So this person got an excellent mark for this story while you got years of sh*t for your more mild one. ITS INSANE!!??? THIS WORLD IS MAD!
