That isn't the US, just an abstract of something taken to far just as it is done all over the world.

Basically though everyone in Europe will think this is the norm for the US for some absurd reason and they are the continent that invented religous intolerance and extremism. Yeah everyone likes to forget and just think it is the US or the Middle East but those ideals came from Europe.

It's a vivid example. People see stuff like that and it sticks with them so they turn it into the stereotype.

I think its made very clear in the documentary that this is a fringe group, and that their hate makes them hated by everyone else, and we see the toll that this isolationism has taken on some of them in the final scene with the twenty year old girl- indeed, this is one of the central themes of the documentary. Only the most biased or stupid viewer would take the Phelps family as representing America, so I don't think you guys need to be too worried about that.
