I actually find them kinda overrated.. I mean, they're good, yes, but I definitely don't listen to them more than once every month and a half or so, and I don't find them to be as amazing as everyone says they are. And they are definitely not metal.

They set the framework for metal, so deserve respect. Yet they themselves weren't metal, but hard rock.

Tommy Iommi himself said in an interview that Sabbath played "heavy jazz". They may have been influential, but it don't make them metal!

Metallica says they play metal on St. Anger, but that doesn't make it true. Sabbath, along with Budgie, are the first metal band. Judas Priest was definitely more influential (and better), though.

Now I don't know for sure, simply because it was way before I was born, and i'm not that familiar with the underground bands of the era, but I'm going to come out and say that Led Zep released both the first Viking metal song ( Immigrant Song ) and the first thrash song (Whole Lotta Love).

I know neither song is obviously a dead ringer for the genres as we know them today, but honestly, the originals very rarely are.

I've heard it said before...can't think of an argument against!

Take that chugging palm muted verse/intro riff, add some distortion, speed it up a bit... what do you get?

But then you can say that about anything. "Take this Simple Plan riff, add a lot more distortion, speed it up a lot, and what do you get?"
