WOW Marty! I'm not sure if I should be surprised that you scored this album so high. Being I know how big of a Rush fan you are :) , I can't help but feel this review is a bit bias. Is there any Rush album that you don't like? :D I really thought you'd score it lower based on your first impression. I guess it took some more spins for you until you could give it a fairer review.

I can't help but feel this one is a little bit of a let down. Sure, I like that they have more acoustics on this album as well as a few instrumentals. For me, that is a welcomed change. However, overall, it sounds more like a Geddy Lee solo album (which, by the way, I like very much). The way this album was hyped up and now listening to it are at opposite ends of the spectrum for me. The album is somewhat listenable but doesn't seem very inspired musically. A few tracks instantly grab you but there is an inconsistency . I wasn't expecting Moving Pictures or 2112, but was hoping for something a bit heavier and more rocking. I'm still going to listen to it some more to see if my mind will change  .

I wish Rush would get back to basics, sort of like what they did on Feedback. I love the production and sound on that album. I wish Geddy would sing with no vocal harmonies, just straight out like he did on the first eight or nine albums. I wish Alex would play more power chords and riffs like on Permanent Waves or Fly By Night. I wish Neil Peart would get a little more technical drum wise.

It's rare for a band that has been in the business as long as Rush to go backwards after progressing away from where they first started. But I do believe that after a while, a band misses that feeling they had when they first started. I think Rush can still do it, just a question of when.

Nice review Marty!

Well, as you may notice by my avatar, I'm a Rush fan. I agree that almost every Rush album, I would say, it grows on you with time. Rush music is something that is not easy to "digest".

After 6 days with this album I can say that I really like it, I think this is one of their best material since a long time. The Main Monkey Business is awesome and there are 4 or 5 songs that gives me goose bumps.

After a disappointing Vapor Trails (my opinion), Rush has bounced back with full energy! :dio:

Alex Lifeson is outstanding in this album while Neil Peart... well, I was expecting more from him. Geddy Lee, damn it, this guy must be an alien, he's not from this planet!

I say Snakes & Arrows is worth a 95/100 but, you know, it's a biased opinion! :P

Sorry the confused english.

Wooooo! New Rush!!! Reservations out the window, uncritical-fellatio-mania!

Well, truth be told I was also underwhelmed by Snakes And Arrows in the beginning. It was just so mellow overall. But it has really been a grower, ironically especially the mellow parts. I really dig the mixture of heaviness with acoustics in the background, like on Far Cry, definitely my favourite so far. Workin Them Angels and Spindrift are also brilliant. Right now, I'd score it about 86 / 100

And leave it to Rush to make an album that has instrumentals as some of the best tracks in the bunch. Which beckons the question...Marty?!? What in blue blazes, why isnt Malignant Narcissism one of your killing songs?? Surely you appreciate Geddy's dominant and pulverizing basslines in the tune?

I actually hear similarities in sound to the Feedback album especially the guitar sound. Alex plays tons of power chords on this album but they are of a more treble based style and it really fills in for the lack of keyboards. This album requires a little time to get into. After the first two listens, I was a little disappointed. It wasn't until the weekend and my 4th 5th and 6th listens that It all came together for me. Play it very loud and try it through headphones. The laid back approach and some of the melodies in those tunes have turned out to be some of my favorite moments on the album. As far as I'm concerned, there really aren't any "bad" Rush albums but there are some that don't measure up to some of the classics. The review wasn't meant to sound biased and if I had scored it after a couple of listens, it would've been 70 - 75 at best. There are a few out there who are indifferent about the album but they seem to be in the minority. Most of the reviews that I've read have been raving about this album......give it some time and revisit it again. It's a fine piece of work.

Glad you like this album. I know in our previous discussion that we both were initially a little disappointed with this album. First impressions are a dangerous thing with any Rush album. Most tend to need a little time to "digest". Malignant Narcissism is a great track with great bass lines but it's a short instrumental and I already listed most of the album as killing tracks already!! Point taken though......40 lashes with a set of Rotosounds!!

It's weird. When I was in my teens I hated Rush; couldn't stand listening them. Now as I get later into my 20's I like them more and more with each passing year, so I figure by the time I'm in my 40's they'll be my favorite band hehe.

It's definately a grower. I find myself liking the second half of the album more so than the first at this point.

I don't know if it's because I'm such a death metaller now-days, and my lack of knowledge about Rush, but the only song on here I really enjoyed was Far Cry. I was expecting Rush to have loads of songs like YYZ and Tom Sawyer, but they spend more time being pretty quiet and light.

Yeah, I do completely get you on the point of naming most but not each song as killing ones...it is quite the pain in the arse when an album comes that has like 8 or 9 killer songs out of ten, and youd really like to just write "Killing songs: All of 'em!" but it just wouldnt be entirely justified. So point taken.

And lest you forget before going a'whipping yerself: boil those Rotos for that extra clarity when it smacks!
