Ive never thought of Arcturus as wanky

I find Darkspace to be wanky. Sounds like they are trying to break the mould of black metal, but its just so boring...

Very much agreed. Wank is the equivalent of a technically extremely realistic painting. That does not make it good, nor art. It's usually less intelligent people with lots of practise that create such paintings/music.

hmm... i don't find Darkspace to be wanky at all, neither boring.. (but Arcturus on the other hand).... Their first full-lenght album is awsome, and that is that - atmospheric, hypnotic and plain awsomeness. Besides, it's not like they are doing something completely different or new. Imo they just took some elements from Lunar Aurora and made them darker and more spacy.



isn't it wankery too, to call such ppl less intelligent just becuase they have painting skills? Imo, it's just as much wankery to let a retard paint a picture with his cock and then claim it's the best abstract and clever art there ever was "uh, this really sais something about sociaty!"

But in a way,it would say something about society. That being that people will say any old crap is the best thing ever to avoid looking stupid.

isn't it the other way around? Ppl would say that it's better than the old crap to avoid looking stupid, to give the impression that they understand art and have a huge brain capacity that can deal with the abstract.

btw.. i like old "crap". It's less pretentious, and despite being more realistic it usually isn't as real as photo for good reasons. The real old crap has a rather distorted picture of reality when it comes sociaty in general, but pictures of nature on the other hand is more alive than a photo, and the nature painting is about expressing the beauty of nature or how raw it can be.

I like Darkspace a lot and Arcturus a lot. I don't think they are remotely exclusive to each other.

The problem here is that you're working in extremes. Abstract doesn't necessarily mean taking it to the extreme of painting something with your dick and attaching some meaning to it. I generally think of something like this:

well... extreme yes, but i have seen lot's of "extreme abstract" art that was crap.

but according to my difiniton your example is not very abstract it has to be more symbolic and more confusing than that .. too easy to understand i think.

I don't know the first painting, but those by Kandinsky and Picasso are really famous. I'm afraid it says more about your taste in art than anything about the general concensus.

Yeah the things that are like a blue background with a 3 green squares called like "distorted cow" are lame. The Kadinsky one is kinda cool though (i like the one Misha posted more).

Wow interesting thread. Let me blast some of my shallow opinions. Darkspace rules, Arturus is weird, Pig Destroyer rules, Converge rules, those painting there suck.


I think in this artsy metal category I like Blut Aus Nord the best. They were at the peak of their pretentiousness with TWWTG. Mort was meh. All bands people consider to be avant garde (which is Polish for artsy) bm are actually awesome bands.



Oh, a while ago some Turkish artist opened a gallery which had an interesting piece. A tissue with his sperm and some sucky poetry on it, preserved for 15 or so years. Some people thought it was awesome art who all deserve to die with shotguns, but a lot of people hated the guy for trying to pass his idiocy and nerdness as art. It was like a ripoff of that guy who showed a urinal as art some time ago. Which also wasn't art and was very stupid.

and how is that? What does it say? I just gave examples on what i find to be abstract. I really don't care much about art in general, though, and don't know that much about it, really. But that doesn't mean i don't have a opinion on what i find abstract and what i find to be completely shit.

But you're right though. I like naturalistic, romantic art and sculptures etc the most for various reasons. And if that makes me an ignorant idiot, so be it ( i also like other types of paintings of course)... i like old classical music too.. uh!! i'm really naughty and stupid

I think you got the wrong end of the stick . What I was trying to say that getting a retard to paint with his dick, and everybody saying it was the best thing ever, would mean that, in a roundabout sort of way, it WOULD say something about society, that being that people will pretend to like the equivalent of me vomiting on a canvas to avoid looking stupid and "unsophisticated" Having said that abstract art can look good as decoration, where you don't have pretentious wankers commenting on it.

Back on topic, for some reason I find Henkka Klingenberg somewhat annoying... must be the rastas.

And here I must stop you. It's all in the way that you look at it - imagine the paint going onto the canvas in layers, building up to a finished piece rather than trying to take it all in at once. You may not understand it, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate it.

Music is different, since you have to give more of yourself to it generally, but much of the arty music I like isn;t Metal, and much of the reason I like, say, Napalm Death is it's blunt heaviness. Not to say the two can't intertwine, but Metal does brutal better than artsy. And the opposite is true for non-metal.
