I remember seeing the original video for blood red sandman by lordi (before anyone ever heard of them, before them winning eurosong.) That is still my favorite video, for a low budget i don't think it gets better then that.
Also deathstars have a very professional video which got me thinking. The more industrial and modern metal do get a bigger budget by the labels then the more straight forward (death,black,thrash...) metal acts.

While there are a few stand out videos of metal bands, many many many videos are so god awful that I tend to focus more on live performance recordings which captures the true essence of hard rock in my opinion.

If you're in the mood for something depressing yet oddly uplifting in places then here's Cult of Luna's video for Leave Me Here:

I hate trying to get links to work - if that works then woo

otherwise no other great ones spring to mind. (apart from Wolf and Raven by Sonata Arctica which is just fun).

why most metal videos consist of a band playing in a warehouse, in the woods, in the rain, or on stage to a non existent audience.

Well I must admit personally I think if the band tries to have some sort of weird story instead it seems just a bit daft ( like the latest Paradise Lost video ... WTF is that all about??? Band gets executed by Nazis.... and that's about it.... back away veeerryy slowy ). It seems more like a proper show if it shows the band playing.

EDIT - yeah, the "Wolf and Raven" video was pretty crappy. great song, though.
Municipal Waste's "Unleash the Bastards" is great, it's a "band playing a fake show" video, everything's exagerated, people on bodyboards jumping into the crowd, zombies, trash cans and limbs flying around and even a piledriver right into the crowd :dio: :dio:
Dragonforce's video for "operation ground and pound" is also pretty cool.

i guess i'll watch any video with a good song, as long as it's not SUPER FUCKING CHEESY, like Rhapsody. sacred forest of elves and shit, eesh.

I hate it when the video's basically the band standing around playing music and nothing else happens at all; nothing interesting in the background, nothing they're doing is interesting, or anything, really.

Tool videos are a given. Weird ass claymation always wins.
And I hate to bring the band up again ('cuz I'm almost sure that most of the people on this site hate them), but I really really love this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGo5MBAiwaE Even if you don't like the band, the video rules.

Yeah I like videos with cool, or at least interesting/funny, animation like what Legacy of the Night mentioned. and that Soilwork video with the little dudes getting chased around by the evil machine :P

That is by the way a great song. Somebody gave it to me a while ago, it is so different compared to their other work. I did not see their video yet.

I never really cared about videos. Most metal videos suck anyway.

And someone said Deathstars. Now I've seen 2 videos of them on headbangers ball, Blitzkrieg and Cyanide or drink the cyanide something like that and it made me think as well. How the hell does a industrial faggoth Swedish band can make such a kickass video and the better known bands can't? I dunno. If someone knows please do share. Do they pay for their own videos or something?

And Deathstars' music sucks.
