I'm an afficianado of many metal styles.

My favorites include death/grind, death/thrash, riff-heavy Bay Area thrash (Dark FUCKING Angel, Exodus), ambient neoclassical (IE Dead Can Dance, I know it's not metal but it's just so good...), black metal (not second wave, only first-age, ambient, and Emperor), some of the 'modern thrash' groove sound such as Pantera and Machine Head, many purveyors of the new metalcore sound (specifically Unearth, Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, earlier The Haunted, and earlier Caliban), death metal in general (favorites include Vader, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Slayer, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Deicide), and some gothenburg. Dark Tranquility and early At The Gates beat the asses of everyone else in that scene, in my opinion.

A lotta stuff, in short.

You?

Damage Plan ??? Dream Theatre ???

both these bands suck BIG BIG time !!! I guess you gotta be really young if you still dig this kinda shit ! man, when you grow up you find music can be something else than technical masturbation à la Dream Theater or "lame commercial to renew a carreer" à la Damage Plan...

myself, i've never been a Pantera fan & thought Anselmo was hell of a bad frontman/singer (so this means in concert but he was drunk & junked all the time then) though I respect him for keeping the metal flame burning...

and remember, it's just my opinion, so, if you really enjoy those bands, i'm happy for you though I don't understand you... :?

as for black metal, I spoke earlier...

Cheers !

I agree that Dream Theatre should do something new, but I don't see how you can say that they suck. Honestly now. And I've never been a big DT fan.

They did change it up a little I think in train of thought, but it still has their sound.

Damageplan is good stuff. :D

Damageplan is the same as Pantera, macho male testosterone nonsense.

Dream Theater was not really on my radar until Train of Thought. That album is metal as hell and dispenses with much of the wankering that they previously had.

I must admit I only own Slaughter of the Soul, but I am dying to get my hands on some of their older stuff especially because I have gotten the impression that it was more diverse and soulfull (which are two very important aspects in my musical taste).

What would you recommend for somebody who really liked SotS but found it a little too repetitive, and would love som more atmosphere, melodies and more varied structures?

I prefer At The Gates's later work personally. Dark Tranquillity is very good, as well as old Soilwork, old In Flames, and old The Haunted. The headliners of melodic death metal are turning into sellouts, and it hurts.

The Red In The Sky Is Ours and With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness are better than Slaughter of the Soul. Get those. Varied structures and melodies, though atmosphere is not their strong suit...

only album i ever bought from DT is Images & Words though i've listened to most of their works...

well, honestly, here's the kind of music I really really hate... pretientiously good musicians playing non-songs... some of you might enjoy this kind of stuff, I don't...

 If I want to listen to technical musical (that's what it's all about with DT !) i put some classical music on... or an old genesis album... or some Coltrane... or a Dillinger Escape Plan album... all in all, there are no moments in my life for "soul-dead" music such as DT...

TRITSIS has assloving production, but what do you expect?

WFIKTBD's is better, but not great.

Dillinger Escape Plan not as wanky as DT? Suuuuuuuuuure. I'm with Jay when it comes to Train of Thought, but I still think they ought to further their style a little... though it would be interesting (/disturbing/sickening) if they'd start using more black vocals - like in ToT's last track. Mwahaha. And then they'd do what Ulver did. And sound like crap, unlike Ulver. Yes, I can so see this happening. DT electro-ambiance. (/sarcasm)

(Yes, they pretty much did that for a few seconds, I know.)

[Disclaimer: I have drunk coffee. This tends to have catastrophic results.]

Complaining about Prog Metal being to technical is like complaining about Speed Metal being to fast.
What's that "Dream Theater is meaningless" bullshit all about?

Is Emporor meaningless because they are nothing but black?
Is Rhapsody meaningless because they are nothing but bombastic?

I wonder when the first will come to claim that Metal is meaningless at all because it is unnecessary heavy....

hehe well said. Dream Theater is great and I think there are very few prog fans who do not like them. And when I say prog fans, liking just Symphony X doesn't really cut it. Most prog fans enjoy both the metal and rock forms of prog and the many bands who combine both. Those kind of people find Dream Theater very meaningful usually. Of course, it all comes down to personal tastes and there is something for everyone but it's this age old complaint about bands sucking because they're something they're not supposed to be in the first place. That doesn't fly with me.

I just hope LaBrie doesn't fake-rap on the next album like he did in two sections of ToT.

Check out The Gallery by Dark Tranquillity if you liked Slaughter of the Soul.
