Hmm, I don't watch all that many movies, especially over the last few years but...

Actor - Johnny Depp (and I pretty much echo what noodles said)
Actress - Judi Dench

I could list off several honorable mentions, but I'm drawing blanks on most of their names... Alfre Woodard, Robbie Coltrane, Philip Seymour Hoffman...

To be honest, most of the bigger names that have been mentioned here have never stood out all that much to me. *shrug*

Weird compared to what, Edward Scissorhands and Hunter S. Thompson? And don't diss Jack Sparrow just because the movies are blockbusters- Depp should have won the Oscar for the first one and is consistently amazing in the second and third.

True enough. I don't know what he (noodles) meant, I guess, so I shouldn't have said I echo his comments. I just haven't cared for the 'Pirates' movies despite the performances he's given in them. My understanding was that he wanted to do a movie his kids could actually see him in, so I don't think it was entirely a cash grab on his end of it though.

I wasn't crazy about the idea of a 'Charlie' remake either, and as good as Depp is, I had a hard time imagining him topping Wilder's performance. Never saw it though...

Now that I think about it, I wasn't too crazy about Once Upon a Time in Mexico either...

I realized too that no one has mentioned Russell Crowe yet, which I have to admit I'm a little surprised by (though he isn't one of my favorites either).

Hmm good points.

That's probably his only performance I've really disliked. I dunno... it just didn't really work for me.

Tom Cruise. Biggest damn ego ever, that's why I love him so much.

I also have some semi-gay attraction to Christian Bale. Amazing actor.

Based solely on his performance as Marc Antony (though he also does a damn good job in A Knight's Tale, one of the few good aspects of that movie), I vote for James Purefoy. Will Arnett also deserves mention.

Ian McKellen too is amazing- my favourite performance of his would have to be in his fascist English version of Richard III, though of course he's amazing in everything, from Lord of the Rings and X Men to his recent work in King Lear.

Honourable mention goes to Alan Cummings. I saw him in Cabaret as the MC, and was incredibly impressed- I've seen that play (and the movie) multiple times, and his performance was without a doubt the best. His career has so much shit in it though that its hard to see.

You simply have good taste, kbrahm, because it is so similar to mine.

James Purefoy was an amazing Antony in "Rome", and the chemistry he had with Polly Walker as Atia was incredible. They were hilarious and terrific and are quite possibly my favorite actor and actress.

Will Arnett is my favorite comic actor and your mentions of McKellan and Cummings resonate far more with me than the 500 Nicholson or DiCaprio mentions.

Didn't Joaquim get the oscar for Johnny Cash?

No, he lost it to Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Out of the less-well-known-than-DeNiro-but-otherwise-great-actors I'd pick John C. Reilly, Steve Buscemi, Joe Pantoliano (based on his Memento performance alone), Paul Giamatti, John Turturro (to all of you Depp fans: did you see the Secret Window? there is a point in that movie, towards the end, when Depp takes over Turturro's role and one can clearly see: Johnny's no match for John :D ), Ralph Fiennes (so great in Cronenberg's Spider, also in Red Dragon, where he steals the show from Hopkins and Norton) and Robert Carlyle.
