...after thinking alot about it.. i don't even have 15 favourite metal bands - ze problem is.. i don't care much for bands in general, i buy one or two good albums and then move on to the next band. One awsome album is not enough to become a favourite band, imo.

10 in no particular order:

Burzum
Paysage D'hiver
Darspace
Vinterriket
Nocternity
Drudkh
Windir
Forest of Fog
Falkenbach
Tamas Katai and his bands - cheating, i know

if i had to make a list of my favourite albums (max 1 per band) the list of bands would look different. ( including Moonblood, Nargaroth, Vlad Tepes, Mütiilation, Mystic Forest, Woods of Ypres, Ulver, Noenum, In the woods, Judas Iscariot, Haatstrijd, Archgoat, Katharsis, Bekhira, Darkthrone, Frostkrieg, Bergthron, Nokturnal Mortum, Besatt, Dark Funeral, Nyktalgia, Godkiller, Amon Amarth, Satanic Warmaster, Skyforger, Emperor, Bathory, Lunar Aurora, Siegneur Voland, Toil, Toxic Holocaust and perhaps a few more, can't remember.. and of course the bands mentioned above)

Haha i'm totally the opposite... for me if I love a band I'll generally like all of their albums.

Yeah same here, it's all about the albums for me. But I'll give it a shot anyways:

1. Iron Maiden (the rest are in no particular order)
Judas Priest
Metallica
Vio-lence
Vinnie Vincent Invasion
Fear Factory
Bon Jovi
Helloween
Queensrÿche
Running Wild
Sonata Arctica
Primal Fear
Disarmonia Mundi
Danger Danger
Scanner

Many of these are based on only a couple of albums, and another problem is that bands with heavily inconsistent careers (Metallica, Fear Factory, Bon Jovi, Queensrÿche...) are hard to judge against bands that are more consistent but whose best works don't quite reach up to the level of the more inconsistent bands (Running Wild).

Great choice there! That's another on my growing list of classic doom bands that need a review on this site.

My list hasn't changed, but it needs additions. For instance, I could've swore I put Neurosis and Evoken on the first list, and Manticora has to be added after the supreme asskickery of both parts of the Black Circus. Once again, in no particular order:

Amon Amarth
Candlemass
King Crimson
Pearl Jam
Alice in Chains
Coheed and Cambria
Dark Tranquillity
Sleep
Deathspell Omega
Nevermore
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Sodom
diSEMBOWELMENT
Boris
Neurosis
Pig Destroyer
Manticora
Evoken
Esoteric
Jon Oliva's Pain
Agalloch
Mastodon
Napalm Death

and I'm sure I'm forgetting others...

(old) Metallica
SYL / Devin
Machine Head
Kamelot
Monster Magnet
Kyuss
Ministry
The Deftones
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Alice in Chains
Coheed & Cambria
Pelican

If I try to go with 15 I'll end up with 150 so I'll say Deathspell Omega X 15.

Dude, you have some very weird tastes...

Here's my tops...I know, not much different than what a lot of others have listed, but I haven't heard nearly as much metal as pretty much everyone else on this forum.

1. Dream Theater: Best musicians out there, in my opinion...add great songwriting and that's all you need for a great band.
2. Into Eternity: If I was going to pick up an instrument and form a band, they would be like these guys...very technical & insane vocals.
3. Megadeth: Every release has been solid, with Countdown and Rust in Peace as classics. I've yet to check out Peace Sells, though.
4. Children of Bodom: Just really entertaining music with great musicianship.
5. Blind Guardian: A Night at the Opera is one of my favorites...
6. In Flames: I only have Clayman so far, but it's incredible.
7. Opeth: I love both sides of them, softer and heavier.
8. Dragonforce: Love teh speed.
9. Coheed and Cambria: Good Apollo is incredible.
10. Tool: I can't listen to them a whole lot, but their music is still great...I can't believe they get played on the radio (not saying that's bad...just surprising).
11. Iron Maiden: I don't listen to them quite as much as I used to, but they're still one of my favorites.
12. Led Zeppelin: Same as with Iron Maiden, except more extreme...I find that I don't like their mellower stuff anymore, but "Achilles Last Stand", "Heartbreaker", etc. are still classics.
13. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon is incredible. The Wall has some good songs too.
14. Rush: I think if I would give these guys more play time I would like them more.
15. Trivium: Yeah, I know not everyone here is too fond of them, but Ascendancy was a really good album IMO and The Crusade looks like it's going to be incredible...

Weird how much my tastes have changed

I still consider myself a n00b, but man, I really had not heard very much metal at all back then.

#1) IRON MAIDEN

They were my first real metal band that I got into back in 1982. Between "The Number of the Beast" and JP's "Screaming For Vengeance" it was a great time to be a young metal fan. Who else has a mascot as cool as Eddie. Plus Maiden's stage shows are second to none..they're absolutely the best.

#2) DREAM THEATER

I had never heard or witnessed such musicianship and complexity when I first heard DT. Mike Portnoy is a god and watching him live is incredible.

#3) ARCH ENEMY

Riffs, riffs, and more riffs. I was thrilled to hear guitar harmony again and they encased it all inside a modern pure molten metal package. Plus...Angela!! Who could find fault with Angela Gossow? I saw someone wearing one of their shirts at a concert not long ago. The back of the shirt said it all..."Pure Fucking Metal"! Nuff Said....

#4) SCAR SYMMETRY

I'm not really sure why I have them placed so high. I don't think the placement is as important as my love of how this band is a perfect mixture of so many different styles of metal. I was kind of perplexed the first time I heard them but by the end of the CD I was hooked. These guys, I feel are the future of metal. "Pitch Black Progress is fantastic.

#5) INTO ETERNITY

I saw these guys open for Stratovarius a few years ago and they blew me away. They were such an eclectic mix of metal styles (much like Scar Symmetry) that they totally caught my interest. I pre-ordered "A Scattering Of Ashes" and that solidified me as a diehard fan of this band. They mix so many styles so fluidly it's really scary. A real talented bunch of guys.

#6) KAMELOT

I actually found Kamelot when "The 4th Legacy" was released. At the time I had not heard songs so well crafted and sung so well. Roy Kahn is amazing. At a time when most bands were turning to muppet growling vocals he was a breath of fresh air. Kamelot can be phrased as "power metal" but they can not be lumped in with all the cheeseball copy cats who are just truly diminutive in stature next to the giant that is Kamelot. Again...these are truly gifted musicians.

#7) DIMMU BORGIR

I have never been a fan of Black/Death Metal. I have always leaned more toward regular metal/progressive/power if I have to stereotype. Recently I found myself listening to harder, faster, darker material. When I first heard Dimmu Borgir it was like a nightmare come true! This is the finest constructed metal forged in the fires of hell. Does it get any slicker and evil? I don't think so. To quote the dark lord of the sith..."Impressive...most impressive". If Darth Vader had a favorite metal band I think it would be Dimmu Borgir.

#8) DARK TRANQUILLITY

In my new extreme/aggressive metal glory I found a true treat. The progressive complexity of Dream Theater coupled with the sheer brutality of Dimmu. Does it get any better than Dark Tranquillity?! I think NOT! These guys just keep producing quality metal. They're never redundant, they're always evolving, and how do they just keep getting better? Who knows? But I'll never complain!

I'll detail the next 7 entries later tonight.
