The first half of the album is really boring and showing a real lack of all the aspects that make Finntroll what they are. The second half thankfully picks things up, but this is still a weak album.
I disagree. I for one accept their change, unlike Sonata Arctica and Twilightning who proved such a change was for the worst. Ur Jordens Djup may just end as my album of the year because, despite it's flaws, it gets played the most of all albums so far in 2007. I can't count how many times i've played En Maktig Har and Nedgang, the two best songs on the album. It takes time to get into this album fully and anyone expecting an album like Jaktens Tid and Nattfodd will be disappointed. Ur Jordens Djup may be many things but certainly not boring.
Like I said though there are some flaws. I'd be really grateful if the band drops the clean vocals in the following albums. Also the production sounded like it's "all over the place", don't know exactly how to describe it but it didn't feel right. Maybe it's what the band was going for considering the darker more black metal-ish sound. And, this is just a minor complaint, I miss Tapio Wilska. The new guy isn't bad, he is just not as great or versatile as Tapio. It's kinda like Ensiferum replacing Jari with the awfully boring Petri...but that is just my opinion.
I think Alex did a great job in the review and agree with mostly everything. Finntroll worship 89/100
