Well, it's almost 43 minutes. That's pretty standard, even if short by their relative standard. The music has tons of depth here. It's more than the amazing production: it's deep, layered, and well thought out. So like you said, they definitely put a lot of work into this motherfucker. Everything sounds great. The vocalwork is especially impressive (both harsh and clean).

83/100

One of their best albums. A solid album for what it is.

Sure is.

I forgot to mention one really cool part of the album, which is found at the end of "The Chosen Legacy". Hellhammer breaks out these lightning fast triplets (has to be somewhere around 210 or over bpm by my guess...sorry, I'm not a drummer!) on his bass drums. It sounds so cool with Shagrath screaming the album's title on top of it.

Yeah this album has it's goods and bads. Overall it's the first Dimmy album I didn't hate since Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, they deserve thumbs up for this. A solid 80 from me.

This album was fuckin amazing! I have been listening to Dimmu for a while and I find this to be one of there best thought out albums thus far in every aspect.

I was going to ignore this until I heard a track, and Simen Thingy's vocals got me. Might get it...

You do that. It's a good album. Not much Simen vocals though, be warned. But it is good and I used to hate them so it is saying something.

You're better off with Borknagar's Quintessence and Archaic Course albums if you like Simen Hestnaes' clean vox.

Indeed. Simen being in Dimmu Borgir is kind of a waste. They used his clean vocals more on Spirtual Blak Dimensions, and that was only a guest spot for him. Once he joined officially they used him less and less. Pay no attention to the Quintessence review that's here, BTW. Whoever did that one didn't understand the album at all.

Thanks for that, I'll check the Archaic Course out.

Interesting how modern BM survivors seem to be going for the punkier side of things. Let's hope the next Enslaved won't be the same, although they're one of the few bands I'd trust to do something really great with it.

Vortex is the only thing I listen to Dimmu Borgir for. Everything else about them has been done better by so many other bands. If your looking for more of his vocals, he sang all the vocals on Arcturus' Sideshow Symphonies which is an awesome album.

I've got that Arcturus (my only one, actually). It's great.

Simen sings on Arcturus' Sham Mirrors album too.. If you like Sideshow, you'll like that one. If music DVD's are your thing, Shipwrecked in Oslo is simply breathtaking, and features Simen as well. The Garm-era Arcturus is amazing, you should look into that.

Like most of my metal collection's gaps, it comes down to finding it for cheap. I have heard the Garm stuff, very good indeed, and I will get around to it eventually.
