Anyway, I don't have a clue about your background but I'd say that being a student probably puts you in a different set of circumstances to those we would regard as being "lower class". That tends to imply people with little upwardly mobile prospects and a lack of educational opportunities, which doesn't sound like you.

Pretty much anyone can go to at least college or vocational school in Finland. Students who don't live with their parents get support for their rent and stuff, and if you can't get by with that you can take a student loan, which is backed by the government for anyone who hasn't ruined their credit.

I would've prefered to go straight to work instead of vocational school, as i don't really have any grand academic ambitions and am not really career-oriented, but being an electrician at a construction site at 14e per hour beats carrying shit at a construction site at 10e per hour, heh. Being able to maintain my music gear by myself is a plus too.

But IMO the fact that people get such a lot of support in Finland from the government may be why there is nothing like the same class-inequality as there is in Britain and the US. And, extremely indirectly, it may be one of the many reasons why people there are healthier too

Good post, I was starting to get that mid 30's gut (I have weight 160 to 165 wince I was a Sr in HS), I cut out junk food and beer and it went away. Easier for me then others but it is amazing how much you can loose if you just cook for yourself and eat healthy. Good luck to those of you trying.

I actually though you (UK) had the somewhat same society wellfare model.. anywho, perhaps it's also due to the amount of hours the poor ppl in America works.. i mean, a normal work week in Denmark is 37 hours a week, work more than that and ppl get less energy and time to cook themselves = fast food = less healthy food.

Obesity is a symptom and not a disease. Yes, frequently it is related to eating badly due to insufficient finances, but trying to solve it all with different diets doesn't always work.


I don't think people deserve derision for a lack of self-control, it's not something they can help. How the hell do you gain self-control if you have none to begin with? OMG FUCK CIRCULAR.


People gain and lose weight because of different nutrients, so simple cookie-cutter low-cal plans can be unsuitable. When I was 16, I weighed 55 kilos, which is a bit low for my height. I started drinking alcohol, and gained 7 kg. When I became a vegetarian, I gained 3 kg in a matter of weeks. Nothing else has made me gain any weight for any reason so far, and I'm a pasty nerd who eats grease-ladden food.

Some people are fat because they eat lots, some because they don't exercise, but some because they're sick, on medication, or just genetically wired that way. Treating it with simple dieting and exercise doesn't always work, and making people feel guilty about being big is just shit. There are as many causes of obesity as there are of nausea.

My mum is big because she gave birth twice, had kidney problems, had several surgeries and shattered a bone in her leg to the point that she became too disabled for proper physical activity. Once, a swimming trainer screamed at her in a public pool where she was trying to do her therapeutic exercises, not realising that she is disabled.

My sister is big because she didn't win the gene lottery, has breathing problems and recently killed her knee while trying to exercise.

My dad is somewhat pudgy because he used to work in highly physical roles and now works in IT.

My boyfriend is big due to bad genetics (both of his parents having the genes for obesity), and past knee and back injuries. How can one lose weight when one can't even go to the gym to exercise without hurting oneself more? When we started dating he was thin after losing over 30 kilos, but that was before his injuries became bad enough to prevent him from exercising.

I'm thin because I have some recessive genes and most of the time I just can't be fucked eating. I go to bed hungry because meh, cooking dinner at night? CBFed! Having to cook separate meals in a family of meat-eaters is kinda icky, not because I hate the sight of meat or cry with compassion for the dead animals (I'm an environmentalist vegetarian, not a compassionate vego), but because it smells like a murder scene since my sensitivity to blood/fish smells heightened.

Some parts of this thread are so heartless they make me want to do awesome things. I want to bust into hospitals and scream at lung cancer patients for bringing it all on themselves by smoking. I want to dance around the sites of drag-racing car accidents. I want to laugh in the faces of parents who breed fully knowing that their children will have disorders that will make childcare very difficult and expensive for them. I want to live forever, and when everything will go to shit, I will sit on something tall and grin, and whisper through my teeth "I told you so".
