Ok people I'm interested in your opinions. My wife is hell bent on getting me an 80GB mp3 player for Christmas. I seem to carry way too many CD's in the car.

I've noticed that the compressed AAC file that Itunes uses really sounds like crap to me. WMA and WAV files sound much better played through Windows Media Player. In fact I'm really thinking of ripping my CD's as lossless files from now on. The Zune can handle those files. So, I'm leaning toward the Zune myself.

Do any of you have much experience with the 80GB Ipod or Zune? Let me know what you think.

I have an iPod, but I prefer CDs and only use it for working out or if I forget to bring a CD.

I'm anti-ipod.

And I have no idea what the flip a zune is.

A Zune, does Creative Labs make them? If so, don't buy it. Every Creative Labs product I've ever bought has broken down in record time.

same. I had an MP3 from Creative and it was complete crap. It worked for about a month and then started having tons of problems and a little bit later it carked it.

I have an Ipod 30GB video, and it's awsome, but I do have a fair few problems with it too.

If the Zune is from Creative, then I am biased toward the Ipod.

Don't get confused here guys.

Creative makes the ZEN

Microsoft makes the ZUNE

Those 2 are very different products that have only 3 letters in common (and not in the same order)

As for my opinion, well the Zune looks nice. But eventhough I've been anti-ipod for years, everybody says that they're sattisfied with their i-pod so it sounds like a very safe and good choice. I hear the selection of peripherals and extras for ipod is really extensive as well.

But since it always comes down to personal preference, then I would advise you to:
1. Go to a shop and try both. Play with them for a while. Interface and user interactivity plays a huge role on devices like those. Sure, you'll get used to anything eventually but "what you don't like and can't stand" is way more important than "what you like and really want". If something feels akward then think again.
2. Check very carefully the detailed specifications for each product. Everything can make a big change depending on how you use it. See what audio/video formats they support, battery lifetime, radio support, screen resolution, bundled and supported software. In short, anything that might be important to you.

That's it, I hope you choose what's best for you!

If you were to get an ipod go for the 160GB one.

i've had an ipod since, hm, 2004 and it died on me around the end of august, and before that it was acting a bit funny sometimes.

the interface is great and itunes kicks ass, but i've never tried the zen or zune.

go for the ipod if you're not looking for something to last you a life time (and who knows, maybe the new ones last longer).

Yeah ipod's have the best interface imo, my only complaint is that iTunes is a bit of a memory hog... I wish it had a "lite" setting where all of the animations/cover art/tricky shit would just be replaced with foobar's really simple text stuff.

I think a lot of people are biased against iPod's because they're the most popular. I only use CD's in my car, I listen to my iPod everywhere else...I've had it for almost two years and I have had ZERO problems with it. I've never had any problems with the file type of iPod's--Zune's sound pretty much exactly the same to me, just make sure you replace the shitty stock iPod earbuds if you want better sound quality. iTunes is ridiculously easy to use, so if that's an important factor for you, I would suggest an iPod. I've heard all good things about the Zune, though, so I won't recommend against that. I have heard that the supposed "sharing songs" feature is a bunch of shit, though.

On the other hand, I used to have a Creative Zen Micro. It sucked...big time. Stay away from Creative.
