^ article that talks about the distribution method. It would be interesting if they released how much revenue they made form the CD box/donations vs how much they made from hail to the thief's CD sales.

I like the donation idea a lot, if more bands had a Paypal link on their website I'd just send them 10$ straight up

i seriously would too if i had my own money and credit card, because frankly i hate popping in CDs and anyway the band only gets a fraction of the cash you pay for them..

i think the pay-what-you-want-concept is awsome. That way artist can earn more cash, normally they wouldn't get more than 1-2$ per sold album - or something like that. Plus piracy get's rather pointless.
It's also good for music in general. That way artist can express themselves better, instead of having the record companies breathing down their neck.

Gigwise is reporting that according to a source close to the band, Radiohead have sold approximately 1.2 million copies of In Rainbows since Wednesday, when it was made available online. Radiohead's seventh album caused a stir when it was announced as a "pay what you like release", which allowed fans to donate whatever amount they wanted to buy the record. At this rate, even if fans each paid 10 cents for the album, the band would still rake in $120k. However, Radiohead are likely much wealthier than that, according to Record of the Day, a website devoted to "providing an essential daily digest of music industry-related stories." The site held a poll to which 3,000 customers said on average they paid £4 each (approx. $8 CDN). Do your math and that would mean the band have raked in £4.8 million - if that average speaks for all 1.2 million who bought In Rainbows. Of course, seeing as they offered a special "discbox" for super-fans at a price of £40, they could be in for even more dosh. Sky's the limit when all the money goes straight to the band.

Yeah, but I think those numbers don't really translate into what might happen for other bands...Radiohead is a huge band, and plus this move has gotten a ton of press. I don't know if lesser known metal bands would really make more of a profit by doing this, although I still think it's a cool idea.

well i think its a great idea for a small metal band. Think about it, a band offers the mp3's and a file with the cover (if u want to bootleg up a burned cd), then offers you whatever you want to pay for the album........

Say it gets downloaded 1000 times. If the average is $5 then the band has made $5000 minus the cost of making the album and the server costs. Sounds alright to me...

And if they don't want to they don't have do anything that a record company would push on them. ie- tours, in stores, promotion in mags, etc. The band could promote itself as much as it wanted.
